When Sheila Fenby’s basement began filling with water Sunday night, it felt like déjà vu.
Her Lorette Avenue home had managed to stay dry through eight years of rainstorms, but fell victim to June’s once-in-a-lifetime storm that hammered southern Manitoba. She chalked up that day as a “freak accident” and began working on repairs to her flooded basement.
She describes that work as “90 per cent done” when her basement filled with several centimetres of water from the toilet and shower. Malak Abas has more here.

📕 Ontario author Shari Lapena’s 10th thriller, Getting Away With Murder, published by Doubleday Canada. will be launched in Winnipeg tonight at 7 p.m. at McNally Robinson Booksellers’ Grant Park location. A two-vehicle crash that killed four teenage friends in the Interlake Sunday night prompted outpourings of grief in several communities and calls for safety improvements at the intersection, which was also the site of a death in July.
Recent high school graduates Maya Borsa and Chloe Vermette, both 18, were identified by their families as victims of the collision at Highway 8 and Provincial Road 229, just west of Winnipeg Beach.
The teens’ parents are waiting for RCMP to provide more information about the cause of the crash. Chloe, who graduated from Windsor Park Collegiate in Winnipeg in July, was driving one of the vehicles, her mother said.
Tom and Bonnie Borsa said their daughter, Maya, a Gimli Collegiate graduate, loved taking care of animals on their farm west of Sandy Hook, and was fiercely proud to be Métis. She wanted to become a doctor or a veterinarian. Chris Kitching has the story.

On Sept. 9, 1930: The Manitoba Free Press reported two men were killed by trains in Manitoba; one, a Winnipegger, was killed when driving a gas engine and plow across the tracks at Willow Range, and the other, a farmer from McCreary, was crushed while walking along the tracks near Neepawa. In Ottawa, disagreement in French was heard in Parliament as newly-elected Conservative MP for Dorchester, Que., Onésime Gagnon, traded barbs with francophone MPs on the Liberal side.
