Landing in Winnipeg: A new discount airline wants to set up a crew hub and airplane-maintenance centre in Winnipeg, but it won’t happen unless Ottawa agrees to exempt the company from a 25 per cent limit on foreign investment in airlines. Canada Jetlines Ltd., based in Richmond, B.C., hopes to establish itself as an ultra-low-cost carrier in Canada, flying up to 64 domestic and international routes within eight years. READ MORE

Budding bromance: Canada’s Andre De Grasse and Jamaica’s Usain Bolt continued to joke with each other Wednesday as they easily qualified for tonight’s 200-metre final at the Olympic Games. De Grasse broke a Canadian record in the semifinal with a 19.80-second finish as he and Bolt coasted to the finish line grinning at one another. READ MORE

False alarm: A false alarm over a possible drowning kept hundreds of would-be swimmers out of the lake at Birds Hill Provincial Park on Wednesday while the water was searched for more than three hours. A provincial government spokesman said the search, which began at about 12:30 p.m., was considered precautionary because no one had actually been reported missing. It was called off at about 4 p.m. READ MORE

Population growth: Winnipeg’s strong population growth over the next 25 years justifies a new fee on the development industry to cover the needed infrastructure, Mayor Brian Bowman said. He said that while the city has a variety of revenue sources available to it to help pay for infrastructure, Winnipeg doesn’t have the one tool that every other municipality uses to finance costs associated with a community’s growth. A forecast released Wednesday predicts Winnipeg’s population growth over the next 25 years is expected to average 8,200 annually. READ MORE

Trusted adviser: Premier Brian Pallister has hired Conservative political heavyweight David McLaughlin as his senior adviser for climate change. McLaughlin, who guided Pallister’s successful election campaign earlier this year, will make about $10,000 a month and is slated to stay on until March 31, 2017. New downtown eatery: Hockey fans and concertgoers will have another place to hang out before or after their events when a new restaurant/bar opens early next year across the street from the MTS Centre. The new 7,000-square-foot Browns Socialhouse — the chain’s third in the city and largest in Canada — is expected to open next January or February on the main floor of the Centrepoint office/retail/hotel complex on the northwest corner of Portage Avenue and Donald Street. On Aug. 18, 2002: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that a horrific crash east of Kenora in which a family of four was killed prompted calls for improvements to be made to that stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway. In Winnipeg, a mother was sent to hospital with serious injuries and her adult son was in jail after she was beaten for two hours for changing the TV channel. READ MORE
