Your forecast: The mild late-February weather continues well into the weekend, according to Environment Canada. We’re looking at a partly cloudy day and a high temperature of -5 C. On Friday, expect a mainly sunny day and a high of 0 C, while Saturday should be equally mild but with a 60 per cent chance of flurries. There’s likely more snow on the way Sunday, with a projected high of -4 C.

Towering effect: The vision of a $400-million development touted to transform downtown Winnipeg came into sharper focus Wednesday. Plans for True North Square include one of city’s oldest and most prominent businesses — James Richardson & Sons, Limited — now a 50 per cent equity partner in the project that includes a hotel, a law firm, residential and retail space. Scotiabank will be one of its anchor tenants and have its name at the top of one of the two towers and Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries will open a “flagship liquor mart” there. READ MORE

Downtown going to the dogs: The city laid out seven possible sites for a downtown dog park at an open house Wednesday night at the Millennium Library. The open house presented the results of an online survey conducted in January. Most of the 1,800 Winnipeggers who responded to the survey said they supported the off-leash park downtown, especially dog owners downtown who are concentrated in the east Exchange District and Broadway Assiniboine areas. Making threats no game: RCMP arrested a 12-year-old boy in southeastern Manitoba for threatening to shoot up an unnamed school within hours, during a multi-player online game. Youths in the U.S. participating in the online game last Saturday morning reported the threat to their local police, who contacted the Mounties. The boy’s address was nailed down and he was arrested, although no guns were ever found. He’ll be in court Tuesday on a charge of uttering threats. READ MORE

Multi-faith leadership: The third annual breakfast of Manitoba Multifaith Leadership goes today from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. in Convocation Hall, University of Winnipeg, 2nd Floor, Wesley Hall, 515 Portage Ave. The guest speaker is NDP MLA candidate Nahanni Fontaine, who was booked for the breakfast while she was still the province’s lead aboriginal adviser on missing and murdered indigenous women.

A walk for Marilyn: This evening, friends and family will hold a vigil and walk for Marilyn Rose Munroe, a mother of four and the victim of a homicide. The 41-year-old woman’s body was discovered in a home in the 200 block of Pritchard Avenue earlier this week. No arrests have been made. The event is planned for 6:45 p.m. outside 298 Pritchard, and those attending will walk to the Aboriginal Funeral Chapel at 724 Selkirk Ave.

Breastfeeding curlers on move: Organizers have asked moms competing in Canada’s top curling championship in Grande Prairie, Alta., to take their babies a block away to nurse. The 2016 Scotties Tournament of Hearts committee has banned children backstage at the sporting event, including breastfed babies. READ MORE

Handi-Transit complaints: Several complaints against Handi-Transit have been forwarded to the Manitoba ombudsman. The Independent Living Resource Centre is taking the issues to the ombudsman’s office on behalf of users who make some pretty serious complaints about the service. One user talks about being left outside a doctor’s office that hadn’t even opened yet, while another, a person who is blind, was intentionally dropped off at a random location after a disagreement with a driver. Charges against Richards stayed: A drug possession charge against NHL player Mike Richards has been stayed in Manitoba provincial court today. The 31-year-old native of Kenora and two-time Stanley Cup winner with the Los Angeles Kings was allegedly found trying to bring the powerful painkiller Oxycodone over the border at the Emerson port of entry on June 17. He was charged with possession of a controlled substance, but the charge was stayed in a Steinbach court Wednesday. In a statement, his Toronto defence lawyer, David Humphrey, said there were “fatal defects” in the Crown’s case. READ MORE

On Feb. 25, 1965: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Canada was in grave danger of breaking up, according to a royal commission on bilingualism and biculturalism.The commission’s report stated that there was a wide gulf between French-speaking and English-speaking Canadians, and that major changes would be needed in the country’s institutions and outlook. In Winnipeg, Metro was likely to help the City of Winnipeg financially to host the Pan-Am Games in 1967.
