ID card nixed: A plan by the former NDP government to develop a new ID card has been cancelled by the Pallister administration. The new card, which would have eliminated the current paper health card and combined it with one’s driver’s licence, would have cost $13 million. READ MORE

Your forecast: There will be milder-than-normal temperatures for as far as the good folks at Environment Canada can see. Today, the high will be zero. On Friday, it will be +1; Saturday, +2; Sunday, zero; Monday, -3; and Tuesday, -6. Complicating matters, however, is the likelihood of showers on Friday night that could make for slippery driving. There’s also a chance of precipitation over the weekend.

Animal cruelty alleged: An animal rights group has filed complaints of animal cruelty after a video surfaced showing a German shepherd being dragged into turbulent waters during the filming of a movie in Manitoba. The footage was shot near Winnipeg in November 2015 for the movie A Dog’s Purpose. The movie is set to be released later this month. READ MORE

Proceeds from crime: The province has elected not to pursue proceeds from the estate of a police officer who died while facing criminal charges. Trent Milan was killed after he drove into the path of a gravel truck last October, just weeks after being charged with 36 offences, including theft and drug and weapons possession. Under the province’s Criminal Property Forfeiture Act, Justice officials could have initiated civil proceedings against Milan’s estate. READ MORE
