Your forecast: Thank you for watching. We now return you to your regularly scheduled winter. After weeks of above-normal temperatures, including a rather heavenly holiday season, we’re in for a spell of cold winter weather. And it all begins Friday afternoon. Today, there’s a 30 per cent chance of flurries and high of -8 C, while the overnight low is -14 C. By late Friday afternoon, the mercury drops to -17 C and a breeze will make it feel like -27. The overnight low Friday is projected to be -26 C. Expect a sunny Saturday and a high of -23 C, while Sunday will be clear, bright and -19 C.

Group home gets green light: The town council of Stonewall voted unanimously Wednesday night to approve conditional use zoning for a group home for people with intellectual challenges. More than 200 community members attended the meeting to support the Association for Community Living Interlake’s group home. Last month, there was initial opposition to the home during a zoning hearing, but there was none Wednesday. READ MORE

Sentencing delayed: An ex-Winnipeg teacher will have to wait until later this month to hear just how long he might go to prison. The 34-year-old man has admitted to a sexual relationship with a female student, who was 17 at the time in 2013 at a Transcona school. He pleaded guilty last year to sexual exploitation and making sexual images available to a person under 18. READ MORE

Commemorative loonie: The Royal Canadian Mint is releasing a special loonie coin to celebrate the 100th anniversary of women getting the right to vote in Canada. One side of the coin will have the same portrait of Queen Elizabeth II we’re used to, while the other will have a portrait of a 1916-era woman casting a ballot while a child looks on. READ MORE

Valuing all faith: And this year’s winner of the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for the Advancement of Inter-religious Understanding is (the envelope please!) … Rev. Karen Toole. Known in Manitoba as a religion commentator who values all faiths, Toole’s public pulpits include a radio show and occasional column in the Free Press. Lt.-Gov. Janice Filmon gives her the honor at Government House at 5 p.m. today.

Rich getting richer?: The Fraser Institute today releases a new study titled Income Mobility, The Rich and Poor in Canada. It examines whether high income Canadians are gaining at the expense of low income Canadians, and is expected to have Manitoba statistics.

Work on Moray Street: Moray Street from Portage Avenue to Bruce Avenue will be temporarily closed today at 6 p.m. until Friday at 6 a.m. so the city can work on the street. Pedestrian access will be maintained.

Wheeler overlooked: Blake Wheeler is a star here, but not one according to the NHL. The Jets right winger was not invited to participate in the league’s annual all-star game, slated for Nashville at the end of the month. Wheeler is seventh in NHL scoring with 40 points (10G, 30A). Only three players have more assists. Winnipeg’s representative at the game will be defenceman Dustin Byfuglien. READ MORE

A changing downtown: Construction will soon begin on the $400-million True North Square project smack-dab in the middle of downtown Winnipeg. Expect to hear the name of the company that will anchor the 19-storey office/retail tower in the next couple of weeks. The project will have a total of three high-rise towers. READ MORE

They’ve got names: Have you made the acquaintance of York and Eli? They’re the newest members of the polar bear clan at the Assiniboine Park Zoo. The two male cubs arrived at the zoo from Churchill at the end of October, but, until this week, didn’t have names. Last month, nearly 600 votes were cast and the names York and Eli won out. Seth Jones: The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired defenceman Seth Jones from the Nashville Predators in exchange for centre Ryan Johansen. Jones, 21, was the fourth-overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft.

On Jan. 7, 1977: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that 80 head of Holstein cattle were killed in a barn fire one mile south of Stonewall. Manitoba was studying making seatbelt use compulsory. Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau had reportedly asked Barbra Streisand to marry him. Sun Life Assurance Company was pulling its head office out of Montreal, citing Quebec’s language laws, saying they could not comply by conducting business in French. Winnipeg moviegoers could see such films as “Oh, God!” “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” Star Wars,” “Which Way is Up?” “Saturday Night Fever” and “Looking For Mr. Goodbar.”
