Accusations of rough play: Did you see some of those body checks handed out Wednesday? No, not between the Penguins and Lightning on the ice. We’re talking about a wild day in the House of Commons in Ottawa, with opposition MPs angrily accusing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of “manhandling” the Conservative whip and elbowing a female NDP MP in the chest prior to a key vote. Trudeau issued an apology, saying he never intended to hurt anyone. It’s likely the PM’s pride that’s really smarting.

Your forecast: Get your outside work and play done Saturday and Sunday because Monday is looking like an inside day, according to Environment Canada. As it stands now, the long weekend weather forecast calls for sunshine and a high of 27 C Saturday and a mix of sun and cloud Sunday and high of 28 C. But clouds roll in Sunday evening and rain showers are expect that night and most of Monday. Leading up to the weekend, we’ve got a pair of sunny, warm days, with daytime temperatures of 27 C today and 26 C Friday.

$1 billion deficit: Premier Brian Pallister’s Progressive Conservatives put a number to the province’s red ink on Wednesday and it was almost $350 million more than the outgoing NDP had previously indicated. Following a predictable political pattern, the PCs accused the NDP of misleading the public, and the NDP countered the number was inflated. And what of the Tories’ promise to cut the PST one per cent? It’s still on, sometime before the next election. READ MORE

Rape victim’s credibility questioned post-conviction: A defence lawyer called a rape victim’s credibility into question based on her past social-media posts during a sentencing hearing Wednesday. Free Press justice reporter Mike McIntyre was live-tweeting during the proceedings. He said it’s not unusual for sexual assault victims to be questioned during trials in cases like this where it is one person’s word against another’s. But it’s rare to see post-trial scrutiny at a sentencing hearing. READ MORE

Osborne House mess: The former women’s shelter is shuttered, with nothing but an alleged phone line to show for its services. But behind it all? It turns out that its non-profit board it is sitting on nearly half a million dollars, including $360,000 in donations. The shelter all but fell apart after a scathing audit of the place in 2013. The province says it returned the money to the board, partly because most of the funds were donated and because it no longer has any links with the place. READ MORE
