Chopper gets camera: The police board has approved a request from the Winnipeg Police Service to re-allocate funds from a reserve account to cover the shortfall that had prevented the purchase of a new thermal imaging camera for the police helicopter, to replace the original equipment that was no longer functional. Police board chairman Coun. Scott Gillingham said the board concluded the purchase of the camera was important. The province, meanwhile, is reviewing the operation of the chopper as part of its value-for-money audit. READ MORE

Husband unaware: The husband of a woman accused of hiding the remains of six full-term babies in a storage unit testified he was unaware of the pregnancies — and he didn’t know she was pregnant with one of their two children until their son was born in hospital. “When he was born, that’s when I found out,” Jeremy Giesbrecht said at the trial of his wife, Andrea on Wednesday. Closing arguments in the trial are set for Friday. READ MORE

Inquest called: An inquest has been called into the death of a man shot by police during a roadside standoff last year. Haki Sefa, 44, was killed by Winnipeg police after waving a gun on Highway 59, just north of the city. Only four weeks earlier, he had learned that Breanna Kannick, 21, a niece he helped raise, had died in a remand centre in Regina. Kannick’s family is still awaiting the results of investigations into that case. READ MORE

New parking rules: Heads up, Winnipeg, a new parking bylaw comes into effect today. Sainthood approaches: Father Brian Kolodiejchuk, a Catholic priest and former Winnipegger, will soon see his efforts come to fruition. He is the postulator (the one who presents a case for canonization) of Mother Teresa. He spent the last 17 years amassing evidence and documents supporting her canonization and will attend the ceremony overseen by Pope Francis on Sunday in Rome. READ MORE

The company behind the world’s largest ride-sharing app has begun publicly encouraging Winnipeggers to voice their opinion on the state of Winnipeg’s taxicab industry, as an independent review of the industry gets underway.
