Key position needs filling: Winnipeg mayor Brian Bowman said Wednesday the city will fill the position of climate change coordinator, adding he wants transparency on all reports on the city’s greenhouse gas emissions. Last week, it was learned the contract for climate change coordinator Sean Madden had lapsed and the position was being reviewed. It was also revealed Madden authored a report stating Winnipeg is not meeting reduction targets for its emissions, but that report was not made public. READ MORE
Long to reign over us: As of Wednesday, Queen Elizabeth II is the longest-reigning monarch in British history. Her Majesty surpassed the reign of her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria’s 23,226 days. That’s more than 63 years. Since Elizabeth ascended the throne at the age of just 25, she has visited Manitoba six times – the last time coming in 2010 where she unveiled a cornerstone at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights during its construction. Vegas flight fire: Officials now say as many as 27 people were injured Tuesday when a British Airways airplane caught fire as it was accelerating for takeoff. The crew and 157 passengers had to escape the burning London-bound plane using the emergency slides, causing cut, bruises, burns and scrapes. A few people also had to be treated for smoke inhalation. The cause of the blaze is still being investigated. READ MORE

Back in the city: NDP Leader Tom Mulcair makes his second campaign trip to Winnipeg today. He will make an announcement at 9:45 a.m. at the Operating Engineers Training Institute of Manitoba on Cree Crescent. The institute provides training to heavy equipment and crane operators. Later in the day, he travels to Edmonton. Mulcair was last in the Manitoba capital on Aug. 20, when he addressed a campaign rally at the RBC Convention Centre. READ MORE
The stain of Main: Citizens and business people who use Main Street between the CPR underpass and Selkirk Avenue are hold a press conference today. They say the notorious area is rife with assaults, robberies and drug pushers, and they will announce a campaign to make it a safe place to be. The co-chair of the campaign is Sel Burrows, a community activist who previously led a campaign to clean up Point Douglas.
Mike Richards: The former Los Angeles Kings centre, who is from Kenora, Ont., is expected to appear in court in Emerson today to face criminal charges that allege he tried to cross the Canada-U.S. border with a controlled substance, the powerful narcotic Oxycodone that is often prescribed for pain relief. The Free Press will attend the court hearing.

No bones about it: Scientists say they’ve discovered a new member of the human family tree, revealed by a huge trove of bones in a barely accessible, pitch-dark chamber of a cave in South Africa, showing a surprising mix of human-like and more primitive characteristics. A reconstruction of Homo naledi was presented during the announcement made in Magaliesburg, South Africa, today.
How good are the kids: Jet fans have watched the organization build a stable of good, young talent. Now, they’re hoping to see the likes of forwards Nikolaj Ehlers, Andrew Copp and Nic Petan, blueliner Josh Morrissey and goalie Connor Hellebuyck make the jump to the big club – or at least star with the team’s AHL affiliate, the Manitoba Moose. This weekend, the Jets’ top prospects will compete at the 2015 Canucks Young Stars Classic in Penticton, B.C., along with the talented youngsters of the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks.
Not enough buses: The city’s transit department says a bus shortage will cause “an indefinite service disruption” on certain routes during the morning and afternoon rush hours today. Though school is starting this week at all levels including university, the city’s advisory stated there will be a reduction of service because there aren’t enough buses. The press release stated that “Citizens are advised that due to a shortage of buses available for regular Transit service, a reduction of available service on select transit routes can be expected until further notice.”

On Sept. 10, 1970: The Winnipeg Free Pres reported that city police officers sought the right to strike during a wage dispute, and had resolved to work to rule. A plan for $50 million worth of new construction for downtown Winnipeg was announced, including a $15-million convention centre and seven new hotels. Local overseas bookings were strong despite four recent skyjackings over Europe and one over the Middle East. Announcers from CBC’s “Information Radio” walked off the job to protest the hiring of Jerry Haslam of CKY and John Harvard of CJOB.
