Good morning!

You dirty rat: We begin the day with a short rat tail – er, tale. It seems a handful of rats were found at the Winnipeg Police Service’s District 3 station in West Kildonan earlier this month. These weren’t big, grey New York subway rats that haul away slices of deep-dish pizza. They were small, white laboratory rats that looked a lot like mice. How they got in, no one knows. But they’ve been cleared from the scene, as it were. READ MORE

Your forecast: This week, we invite you to open up your heart and let the sunshine in – just like the song says. Environment Canada is offering up a wonderful, seven-day forecast for Winnipeg and area, beginning today with a daytime high of 14 C under a partly sunny sky. On Wednesday, expect much the same, while Thursday will be sunny and 9 C. The temperature rises to 11 C on Friday and 12 C on Saturday under bright blue skies, and then we start to hit temperatures in the mid- to high-teens Sunday and Monday.

Canadian executed: John Ridsdel, a Canadian beheaded by hostage-takers in the Philippines, was remembered Monday as a brilliant, compassionate man. Police believe the blaze at the three-storey building at the corner of Maryland Street and Westminster Avenue was deliberately set. Two nearby homes were also heavily damaged, and two women who lived in one of the homes had to be treated in hospital. Four firefighters were also treated for minor injuries but have been released from the hospital. READ MORE
