Today, we’re in for a mostly cloudy day and a high of 2 C, while the overnight low is -2 C. Expect Wednesday to be even warmer, with a high of 5 C. There is a chance of snow overnight and into Thursday morning. The high Thursday is – 2 C, followed by a high of just -6 C on Friday. The temperature drops to -7 C Saturday with an overnight low of -10 C., while Sunday will be sunny and -8 C. All in all, not too shabby for December.

LaPo back in Blue: Paul LaPolice has been named the new offensive coordinator for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Racism rants on social media: Racism towards Syrian students who have not yet arrived in Canada is tearing through Winnipeg School Division on social media. Trustee Dean Koshelanyk warned at Monday night’s school board meeting there are extreme concerns regarding racist comments about potential students before they have even arrived. Koshelanyk urged the division to work with “existing students” to ensure they welcome the imminent influx of students. READ MORE

Clearest rink in the land: A rare phenomenon has turned Clear Lake in Riding Mountain National Park into a massive skating rink that is virtually transparent, showing off the lake bed below. The rare glass-like ice has become what may be the most perfect outdoor rink in the world, for now. The combination of cool, calm nights and an absence of snow, Clear Lake has frozen over into an almost-perfect giant sheet of ice. Sand, rocks and even fish below can be seen clearly through the ice. Senior smack down: After a violent brawl between two senior citizens ended with one in hospital and the other in jail, a last-minute plea bargain has avoided a criminal trial. Brian Garry Bales, 71, pleaded guilty on Monday to assault with a weapon just as his case was set for hearing. In exchange, the Crown dropped a much more serious charge of attempted murder. Bales remains free on bail and is expected to be sentenced in April 2016. The incident happened in June 2013 inside an Atlantic Avenue apartment block where the two men, who knew each other, lived on different floors. The victim, who was 76 at the time, suffered critical injuries after being stabbed. He underwent surgery and eventually made a full recovery. READ MORE
Greene earns Grammy nominations: Saxophonist Jimmy Greene, who turned a family tragedy into a celebration of a young girl’s life, earned two Grammy Award nominations Monday for his album, Beautiful Life. The former jazz professor at the University of Manitoba recorded the album as a tribute to his daughter, Ana Grace Marquez-Greene, 6, killed during a mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., in December 2012. The Early Years Choir at Linden Christian School, where Ana Grace attended while the Marquez-Greene family lived in Winnipeg, also participated in the Beautiful Life project, collaborating on a song with jazz vocalist Kurt Elling. #Trump: People across the globe are condemning Donald Trump’s suggestion to forbid Muslims from coming into the United States. On Monday the Republican presidential candidate called for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States,” drawing cheers of support from those at a rally in South Carolina. But the lineup to criticise Trump’s dramatic response to last week’s shooting spree in San Bernardino, Calif., is a long one. On Dec. 8, 1972: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that the Apollo 17 rocket had to make adjustments to get back on course for the moon. A Boeing 707 landed safely at Addis Abbaba despite a hole being torn in the craft’s hull by a hijacker’s grenade; seven hijackers were killed by security forces. Life magazine was due to cease publishing with the Dec. 29 issue. In Manitoba, vehicle owners would see a drop in Autopac rates in the coming year. Doctors in the United States were accused of “massively over-prescribing and mis-prescribing antibiotics.”
