On Feb. 21, 1991: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that a million troops stationed in Saudi Arabia awaited orders to launch a ground war to drive Iraqi forces from Kuwait, which Iraq’s Saddam Hussein had occupied, prompting an international coalition led by the United States to take military action against Hussein. In Manitoba, anesthetists at five hospitals in Winnipeg and Brandon were prepared to walk off the job if they were not given pay raises won by their counterparts at other hospitals. A University of Manitoba economist estimated Manitobans were paying $14 million a year in taxes on taxes at the gasoline pump. The cost of gasoline was expected to hit 48 cents a litre by the spring.
