Your forecast: The temperature alone won’t knock you out, but add in wind gusts of up to 60 km/h by noon and it’s a nasty one-two combo by Mother Nature. Environment Canada is calling for periods of snow and a high of -15 C today, with a wicked wind chill of -33. The overnight low is -15 C. On Wednesday, expect cloud cover, a 30 per cent chance of flurries and a high of -12 C, Thursday is projected to be sunny and -16 C, while the forecasted high is -11 C Friday. Relief should come Saturday when the expected daytime high is -5 C.

Unique fundraiser for CMHR: The Friends of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights is auctioning off an original work of art by none other than Canada’s newest prime minister, Justin Trudeau. Inspired by a visit to the CMHR last March before the election, Trudeau made a sketch of the building at The Forks. The art work will be up for auction on eBay from Feb. 5 to 15. READ MORE

Eadie cleared by police board: City councillor Ross Eadie will be returning to work on the Winnipeg police board after an internal investigation found he had not breached its code of ethics when he spent the night in the drunk tank on Nov. 6. The board released a statement Monday afternoon after Eadie met with the board that morning. READ MORE

Furniture for Syrian refugees: There are 34 “executive” suites full of luxury furnishings being donated by Westcorp, which bought the building formerly known as Place Louis Riel Suite Hotel, remodelled it and renamed it Antares Luxury Suites, for distribution to resettled Syrian refugees today. Supporting Syrian refugees: The only thing better than helping other people is helping other people in a way that is fun and entertaining. A benefit concert for Syrian refugees at The Park Theatre today includes entertainment by Sweet Alibi, DJ Co-Op and The Bonaduces. The music starts at 8 p.m., and tickets are $20, or $15 for students or low-income families.

Laurie Boschman: The former Winnipeg Jets star is the guest speaker at a 2 p.m. pep rally for the All Seniors Care Living Centre games at River Ridge Retirement Residence, 50 Ridgecrest Ave. The Winnipeg seniors will engage in a week of friendly games and sporting competition with the residents of 22 other seniors’ centers throughout Canada.

Future of Conservatives: Rona Ambrose, the interim leader of the federal Conservative Party, meets with the Free Press editorial board today at 10 a.m. at the Free Press News Café. The event will be livestreamed. She then goes to Delta Winnipeg to be the luncheon speaker at an 11:30 a.m. luncheon of the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce.

Discount airline grounded for now: NewLeaf Travel Company’s CEO announced Monday it will delay its launch date for flights while the Canadian Transportation Agency reviews licensing regulations for indirect air service providers. The company will refund all credit card transactions for reservations that were scheduled to begin Feb. 12. NewLeaf hopes to be in the air by spring. READ MORE

Apology from Free Press: Thousands of subscribers to the Winnipeg Free Press did not receive their newspaper Monday morning after an electrical problem that took hours to repair and a further mechanical problem in the mailroom. Glenn Frey: The music world has lost another giant. Glenn Frey, a singer, songwriter and guitarist with the band the Eagles died Tuesday in New York at the age of 67. He also had a very successful solo career when the Eagles broke up in 1980 for a long stretch, and also acted in movies and TV. On its website, the Eagles issued this statement: “Glenn fought a courageous battle for the past several weeks but, sadly, succumbed to complications from Rheumatoid Arthritis, Acute Ulcerative Colitis and Pneumonia. Words can neither describe our sorrow, nor our love and respect for all that he has given to us, his family, the music community & millions of fans worldwide.” READ MORE

On Jan. 18, 1876: The Daily Free press reported that beaver skins were fetching between $1 to 2.50 per pound, bear skins were $2 to $12 per skin and silver fox $25 to $75. The Free Press noted that a recent Globe article on Manitoba was “not entirely devoid of, if not inaccurate statements, at least a tinge of prejudice.” The Globe apparently considered the current session of the Manitoba Legislature and the abolition of the Legislative Council was a sign of progress.
