Your forecast: We’re in for a couple more days of above-normal temperatures before some really cold weather comes our way. Today will be mostly sunny, with some late-afternoon clouds and a high of -7 C. Tonight, the temperature drops to -13 C. Expect a cloudy Wednesday and a high of -8 C., while Thursday will be partly sunny and -10 C. The mercury plummets to -21 C Friday evening, with daytime highs of just -18 C and -22 C Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Victim speaks out: Shaylene Wilson, 22, of Winnipeg spoke to the Free Press on Monday to help other victims of domestic abuse escape before it’s too late. Wilson suffered serious injuries on New Year’s Eve after police say she was pulled into a vehicle that was then deliberately smashed into a parked semi-trailer. Her former partner is in custody facing several charges including kidnapping, attempted murder and breach of a court order. READ MORE

Stories of hope: The Manitoba Alzheimer Society’s #StillHere campaign, launched on Monday, uses video and profiles online to share the stories of people who have the disease and are living life to the fullest. Don de Vlaming, 75, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s two years ago, will share his story at a public education event called Dementia… Are You Worried? at 7 p.m. Jan. 28 at the Samuel N. Stadium cost skyrocketing: The total cost of the Investors Group Field football will be $376 million by the time all the loans are paid back – an amount that includes $167 million in interest charges on a pair of loans over the 45-year life of the 33,500-seat facility. Big day for schools: Manitoba Education Minister James Allum will be announcing one of the NDP’s biggest increases in public school operating grants in its 16 years in office. Allum will be at College Sturgeon Heights Collegiate at 10:30 a.m. to announce a 2.55 per cent increase in the province’s share of the $2.25-billion system, or $32.5 million more than last year. Literacy, numeracy, indigenous student achievement, and money to help schools welcome Syrian refugee children are the highlights.

Hearts open to MacGyver: There have been 15 ownership claims for MacGyver, Winnipeg’s winter survival budgie, said Avian Welfare Canada president Melanie Shura who is caring for the bird. Shura said budgies have markings that can individualize them, so she is keeping confidential some of MacGyver’s physical traits in case his owner can be found. READ MORE

Paris victims honoured: Seventeen people killed in Islamic extremist attacks on French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, a kosher market and police a year ago this week were honoured by French president Francois Hollande. Plaques around Paris commemorating the attacks were unveiled, with victims’ families and dignitaries present. READ MORE

Jean-Louis L’Allier: The former Quebec City mayor died overnight on Jan. 4 after a short illness. L’Allier was 77. He served as mayor of the city from 1989 to 2005. Before that, he was a Member of the Quebec National Assembly in the 1970s with the Quebec Liberal Party.

On Jan. 5, 1967: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Liberal MP and former finance minister Walter Gordon, after a year in the political wilderness and who was expected to retire, was given a cabinet post by Prime Minister Lester Pearson. Gordon had previously criticized the Liberal cabinet in a series of coast-to-coast speeches. The news surprised many in Ottawa and western Liberals reacted guardedly. Winnipeg looked likely to avoid being hit by the first serious snowstorm of the year. The United States said it welcomed what seemed to be a signal from North Vietnam it would ease its peace talks terms.
