Garbage contracts up for grabs: This morning, we begin with a story that should make Winnipeg homeowners somewhat relieved. Next month, the city plans to issue a request for proposals for companies interested in two lucrative waste-collection contracts. But the price of the lowest bid alone won’t be the defining factor. Your forecast: Winnipeggers are waking to a brilliant sunrise early this morning, and it’s a harbinger of things to come. Expect plenty of sunshine for the next week and temperatures that should green the grass and get trees budding. Environment Canada is calling for a sunny, windy day and a high of 18 C today, Wednesday will be sunny and 19 C, while Thursday’s temperature will soar to 29 C. The weekend looks spectacular, with temperatures ranging from 17 C Friday to 23 C Sunday.

Bell buys MTS: Bell called with an offer MTS couldn’t refuse. BCE Inc. signed a friendly deal valued at $3.9 billion to buy Manitoba Telecom Services Inc., the companies announced Monday. The agreement will add Manitoba’s largest phone, Internet and wireless company to a Montreal-based telecommunication business that stretches across Canada. The downtown Winnipeg arena will still be called MTS Centre. READ MORE

Murder allegations: Two men aged 19 and 22 are charged with first-degree murder in the death of Nicholas Brophy, 19, of Thompson. RCMP made the arrests Saturday, the same day they announced Brophy’s remains had been found outside the northern city, but police announced the arrests Monday. Brophy had been missing since Sept. 9, 2015, and searches were conducted in and around Thompson. Human remains were found last Tuesday and were positively identified as belonging to the teen. Stage hit returns: The Book of Mormon, the hit Broadway musical that last appeared in Winnipeg in March 2015, returns to the Centennial Concert Hall from Sept. 27-Oct. 2. On May 3, 1988: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that doctors were warning Winnipeggers with asthma or allergies to stay indoors, as high winds were dumping huge amounts of dust on the city, making breathing difficult. “In my 12 years as an emergency physician, I’ve never seen anything like this,” said Dr. Neil Swirsky. Six hundred people were forced to flee Whitedog Indian Reserve due to fires in the Kenora and Whiteshell region. In the western part of the province, flooding caused havoc near Swan River.
