Good morning!

Your forecast: Environment Canada has a message for Winnipeggers this morning: “Winter is coming.” Sure, it’s only three words, but it’s really more of a five-month sentence. The weather experts warn “an intense low-pressure system with a strong cold front will sweep across the province Wednesday afternoon bringing an abrupt end to the mild November weather… temperatures will plummet to normal for this time of year with overnight lows in the minus double digits.” Today, expect periods of rain and a temperature falling to 4 C by mid afternoon. Clouds return Wednesday morning and rain begins by noon and continues into the evening. But as the mercury drops and the wind picks up, the snow starts falling Thursday and we’re headed for an overnight low of -8 C. Brace yourself for daytime temperatures of -4 C Friday and -11 C overnight, and a daytime high of -6 C Saturday and an overnight low of -14 C.

One of our own: A Canadian was injured during the Paris attacks, a Foreign Affairs spokeswoman said late Monday. Diana Khaddaj told The Canadian Press in an email that consular officials in Paris are in contact with the family of the Canadian and are providing assistance. She says no other information is being released for privacy reasons. The co-ordinated gun and bomb attacks on France’s national stadium, a concert hall and cafés left 129 people dead and 350 wounded Friday. READ MORE

Plenty of pre-election spending: With just five months to go before Manitobans head to the polls, the provincial NDP government is promising more cash for big-ticket items as a way to generate support from voters. In its final throne speech before the April 19 provincial election, the Selinger government promised, among other things, billions more on infrastructure spending, 12,000 more affordable child-care spaces, a plan to remove rail yards from Winnipeg and a regular boost to minimum wage. Come sail away: The 1970s and 80s hit-making group from Chicago, Styx, plays the MTS Centre at 7:30 p.m. tonight. Original lead singer Dennis DeYoung is long gone, but Canadian recording artist Lawrence Gowan joined the band in 1999 and has been touring with it ever since. Styx played Monday night in Thunder Bay and cranked out classics such as “Lady,” “Too Much Time on My Hands,” “Renegade” and the aforementioned “Come Sail Away.” But they also showed a playful side, performing “The Good Old Hockey Game” and a medley of “Rocket Man/Bohemian Rhapsody/Dock of the Bay.”

Jets singing the Blues: The bad old days continued for the Winnipeg Jets on Monday night. The visitors dropped a 3-2 decision to the St. Louis Blues to put the lid on an ugly 0-4 road trip through the Central Division. Winnipeg has now lost six straight and will look to rebound Wednesday when the Vancouver Canucks come to town, kicking off a three-game home stand for the Jets. READ MORE

That’s quite a reward: Russia’s FSB security service has offered a $50 million reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for downing a Russian passenger plane over Egypt last month. Battlefront: As if there weren’t enough hype over the new Star Wars movie hitting theatres next month, the video game industry is getting a taste of Force fever with the release of Star Wars: Battlefront. Players can fight their way through famous conflicts inspired by the movies, but so far opinion is divided, with some gamers singing its praises while others critical whether this incarnation is an improvement over previous instalments of the game.

On Nov. 17, 1953: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that the mayor of Los Angeles felt entertainment at a city reception for the king and queen of Greece, supplied by singer Eartha Kitt and master of ceremonies Dick Powell, was too risqué. “I personally found some of the lyrics offensive,” said Mayor Norris Poulson. Kitt responded: “I can’t understand it. I’m just an innocent little girl. I didn’t think it was possible to shock politicians.” Meanwhile in Winnipeg, the Blue Bombers were set to face Toronto Balmy Beach in a playoff game for the Grey Cup, and the Bombers would not decide until after that game whether to take part in a Grey Cup parade to be held in Toronto. Moscow radio listeners heard that U.S. President Eisenhower’s visit to Canada was meant to enslave the country and sever its ties to Britain.
