Good morning!

Your forecast: We’re not talking Maui, the Mayan Riviera or Montego Bay, but sunseekers will appreciate the long-term forecast for our little corner of Manitoba. First things first. Expect a cloudy day, with a 30 per cent chance of flurries this morning, the breeze picking up in the afternoon and a high of 1 C. There’s snow likely coming this evening and the mercury drops to -3 C overnight. On Wednesday, the snow ends in the morning but the wind picks up to 30 km/h gusting to 50 and the temperature falls to -7 C by mid afternoon. The overnight low is a frigid -19 C. However, Thursday through Monday there’s a whole lot of sunshine and blue sky in sight with relatively comfortable daytime temperatures of -4 C on Grey Cup Sunday and -3 C on Monday.

Gunning for trouble: Former NHL player Ian White, a Steinbach native, was arrested last Friday after police executed search warrants in his Winnipeg home and Kenora cottage. Officers seized seven firearms, including two that were unregistered, and a loaded handgun in a bag outside his young children’s bedroom. Court documents obtained by the Free Press revealed White is facing seven criminal charges, including breach of a recognizance, after members of the RCMP National Weapons Enforcement Support Team executed the two search warrants. City secrecy loses land: City officials will not be allowed to expropriate land in the Fort Garry area known as the Parker lands due to their own underhanded actions. Inquiry officer George Ulyatt said in an independent report that evidence revealed that city officials deliberately lied to developer Andrew Marquess about the city’s interest in his land, among other “secretive and dishonest actions.” As a result, Ulyatt is recommending the city find somewhere else to put the massive storm water retention basin it had planned to put on the Parker lands. Welcoming Syrians: An announcement out of Ottawa today is eagerly awaited by Manitobans who work and volunteer in the immigrant settlement community. They expect details of how Canada will take in thousands of Syrians in the coming months, including about 2,000 in Manitoba. Sources say Ottawa officials were on the cusp of revealing details at least twice before, held back once for logistical reasons and a second time in the aftermath of the attacks in Paris which gave political pause to the issue. Where would 2,000 new Syrian/Manitobans live? That’s one of the details expected today. READ MORE

Oral histories: An exhibit on First Nations health opens today with a ceremony at the University of Manitoba. The week-long exhibit features 45 oral histories, and it marks the last 40 years of First Nations, Métis, Inuit and Indigenous health research in Manitoba with more than 50 interviews with people working in this field. The stories, told from a wide variety of perspectives, reveal the ways in which the research community has listened to and learned from First Nations, Métis, Inuit and Indigenous communities and organizations. The exhibit opens with a ceremony at noon at the Brodie Centre Atrium, on the Bannatyne Campus, 727 McDermot Ave.

The logical concert: If you’re a Supertramp fan, you’ve got a bloody right to be at the Club Regent Centre tonight. Roger Hodgson, formerly of Supertramp, plays the club tonight at 8 p.m. A quick scan of Ticketmaster shows just a handful of single tickets still available.

Reward to find Reid: The family of Reid Bricker, a 33-year-old Winnipeg man who has been missing for a month, is now offering a $2,000 reward as they search for answers in his disappearance. The reward is for information that leads to Reid Bricker’s body being found, as his family presumes he is dead. Bricker’s mother Bonnie Bricker said her family is “without hope at this point.” He was last seen around 3 a.m. on Oct. 24 leaving the Health Sciences Centre after staff released him. He’d been hospitalized after his third suicide attempt in 10 days. His family later found his suicide note. READ MORE

Prime hugs: One by one, the premiers of Canada emerged from behind a curtain, walked toward Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and received a hearty embrace. Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger walked away joking to his staff he had never been hugged by a prime minister before. You’ll recall Trudeau admitted the day he was sworn in as Canada’s 43rd prime minister Nov. 4 that hugging is his thing. It was just one of the many signs there is a new sheriff in town as Canada’s first ministers met as a group for the first time in almost seven years. READ MORE

Jets caught in Avalanche: The visiting Colorado Avalanche scored three times in the third period to slide past the Winnipeg Jets 4-1 in NHL play at the MTS Centre. Winnipeg’s only goal came in the first period on a long shot from the blueliner Toby Enstrom. The Jets, now back to .500 at 10-10-1-1, dominated through the first 40 minutes, with a huge advantage in time of puck possession, but created few scoring chances. They better figure out how to get pucks to the net as they head out for road games in Washington, Minnesota and Denver. READ MORE

On Nov. 24, 1908: The Manitoba Free press reported that members of the national transcontinental commission would press British newspaper the Times of London to retract charges it had made while editorializing on the Canadian election that the graft was rampant in the construction of the transcontinental railway. A power plant for the City of Winnipeg was expected to cost $1.5 million; city council approved a motion to call for tenders for its construction.
