Good morning!

Your forecast: The rain and wind that hammered southern Manitoba on Monday ‘leaved us’ with a heck of a mess today. Relax, grammar cops, we’re just having some early morning fun. Indeed, many yards will be covered in leaves today but the weather will cooperate if raking is on the agenda. Expect a mainly sunny day and a high of 14 C, while Wednesday will be sunny and 15 C. Things turn cooler Thursday and Friday, with temperatures at 10 C and 7 C, respectively, but with plenty of sunshine.

Weekend tragedy: A small community in southwestern Manitoba is mourning the loss of a 20-year-old woman who was killed by a suspected drunk driver on Friday night as she was travelling home from school for the Thanksgiving weekend. Taylor Renwick of Napinka, Man., a student in the University of Manitoba’s athletic therapy program, died at the scene of a head-on collision on Highway 2, about three kilometres east of St. Claude. The driver of the other vehicle, a 27-year-man allegedly impaired and driving at a high rate of speed, remains in critical condition, the RCMP said late Monday. READ MORE

Feeding those less fortunate: While hundreds of people packed Siloam Mission on Monday for its annual Thanksgiving dinner, staff say there’s been a marked increase in the number of people who use the services of the mission on a regular basis. Siloam spokeswoman Reagen Peters said the mission normally feeds about 400 to 500 people a day. In recent months, that number has increased to 600 or 700. Though the mission serves mostly men, there’s even been a spike in the number of women seeking overnight shelter. The mission is hoping the upcoming first-ever census of Winnipeg’s homeless population might shed some light on the issue. READ MORE

Jays even series: A lot of Canadian television sets were likely on during Thanksgiving dinner Monday, however, for those not quite up to speed on the Major League Baseball playoffs, let’s just say it was a great night for the Toronto Blue Jays and their fans. Backed by early home runs from Josh Donaldson, Kevin Pillar and Chris Colabello, the Blue Jays defeated the Texas Rangers 8-4 in Arlington, Tex., to even the clubs’ American League Division Series at two games apiece. The deciding game goes Wednesday afternoon at Rogers Centre in Toronto. READ MORE

Niqab rally: A rally will be held in Winnipeg today to support the Muslim women who wear the veil that covers their hair and face, except for their eyes. The event ‘Our Canada Includes Muslims: Support the Niqab’ goes at noon at the Winnipeg Central Mosque, 715 Ellice Ave. Although it’s extremely rare to see a woman wearing a niqab in Winnipeg, the face-covering has been controversial in the federal election campaign as politicians disagree on whether aspiring Canadians should be forced to remove their niqabs when swearing their citizenship.

The Village is vexed: Many Osborne Village residents are heading to City Hall this morning, and it’s not to bring city councillors trademark Village specialties like gourmet coffee and granola cookies. Residents are concerned a committee is considering a seven-storey rental development that would involve the demolition of four Roslyn Road properties located at the rear of the Osborne Village Safeway. If approved, a single 74-unit building will replace properties such as the historic Dennistoun House and a neighbouring 100-year-old home. READ MORE

Communist leader: Miguel, Figueroa, leader of the Communist Party of Canada, will be in Winnipeg over the next few days to campaign for his party. And he’ll be supporting the campaign of Darrell Rankin, the CPC candidate in Winnipeg Centre. Figueroa’s itinerary includes stops at New Flyer, 711 Kernaghan Ave., today at 3:15 p.m., and the University of Winnipeg downtown campus on Wednesday at noon inside Riddell Cafeteria, and public meeting at the Millennium Library on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Lion-killer welcome in Zimbabwe: Minnesota dentist James Palmer, the man vilified for killing a well-known lion in Zimbabwe earlier this year, can now safely return to the African country as a tourist, if he so chooses. Zimbabwe’s police and prosecutors say Palmer did not break any of the country’s hunting laws when he killed Cecil the lion in a bow hunt. Cecil, who lived in Hwange National Park, was beloved by tourists and researchers. READ MORE

Trouble at advance polls: Winnipeggers who wanted to get a jump on voting late last week and over the Thanksgiving long weekend were not exactly met with a smooth operation at polling centres around town. Indeed, waiting in line for more than an hour at advance polls doesn’t sound like much fun. Free Press readers who cast ballots early reported Election Canada staff shortages at the polls, or workers who simply didn’t know how to implement procedures. Needless to say, lots of people just want home frustrated with democracy in inaction. READ MORE

Big change for Playboy: For 62 years, Playboy magazine has featured nude female models, but those days will soon be over. Hugh Hefner has decided to stop publishing full-frontal nudity in his magazine, starting in March 2016. Bosses on the magazine say the naked truth is that it’s passé to focus on nudity.

Lovelace worked with the inventor Charles Babbage on his “analytical engine” creation in the 1850s – a mechanical computing device that he designed but never built.

On Oct. 13, 1932: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that a growing protest army of farmers from the Farmers Unity League, nearly 150 strong, was marching on Winnipeg and had made camp at Winnipeg Beach. Prime Minister Bennett was pleased with Canada having signed four trade pacts at the recent Imperial Conference. Canada made 225 substantive changes to its tariff wall that would give “United Kingdom manufacturers the opportunity to capture the market from the United States and other foreign competitors.” And Englishwoman was shot down by Manchurian bandits as she attempted to stop the kidnapping of her three children.
