Expect the mercury to hit 30 C today. On Thursday, expect a mix of sun and cloud, a 30 per cent chance of showers late in the morning and a high of 21 C. We’re in for a terrific weekend, with plenty of sunshine and temperatures ranging from 26 C Friday to 29 C by Sunday.

Hot water for Red River: A Red River College student who suffered a brutal beating while on a work placement is suing the school. Jackie Healey was on an internship for RRC’s child and youth care diploma program, working at a centre near Selkirk, when a group of teenage residents attacked her and a colleague with a baseball bat and a sock full of pool balls. Healey was sent to the hospital with a fractured skull, broken teeth and vision loss. Now Healey’s seeking damages from RRC and the Behavioural Health Foundation, which runs the Selkirk centre. In the dark: Canada’s federal prison watchdog says prisons are doctoring jail death reports before they’re sent to families, blacking out possible errors or shortfalls. The cleaned-up versions “(leave) little room for public scrutiny, accountability or… legal recourse,” according to a study prepared by the Office of the Correctional Investigator. According to the Correctional Investigator himself, the edits are a misuse of access to information law and privacy law. READ MORE
