Your forecast: Winnipeg could receive some snow this afternoon, and a southwest breeze could blow it around. The high today is -10 C, although the wind will definitely give the day some bite. Tonight, the temperature drops to -13 C and a there’s a 40 per cent chance of flurries. Expect a cloudy Thursday with a daytime high of -8 C, while the mercury drops to -11 C late at night on New Year’s Eve. But we’re being told by Environment Canada that Friday — New Year’s Day — should be sunny and -6 C, while Saturday and Sunday could be carbon copies.

Death unpreventable: A Winnipeg judge has come to the conclusion that Heather Brenan’s 2012 death from a blood clot in her lung could not have been prevented. Despite that finding, Provincial Court Judge Margaret Wiebe made 25 recommendations for change to the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority in an inquest report released Tuesday. Brenan, 68, was sent home alone by taxi after four days in the care of the Seven Oaks Hospital emergency department in January 2012. She collapsed and was rushed back to hospital, where she died hours later. READ MORE

Eyes on Blue Cross: Winnipeg eyewear-technology company Eyewear Evolution Inc., is suing Manitoba Blue Cross for at least $9.1 million, alleging the insurance company reneged on a deal to create a direct-billing system and then used confidential information to create a direct-billing system of its own. A Christmas without her: FP reporter Mike McIntyre reflects on the mysterious disappearance of Thelma Krull, a story he covered in 2015 that isn’t over yet. It has been 168 days since Krull, 57, vanished without a trace while out for a morning stroll. After Krull disappeared on July 11, the police homicide unit took over the investigation days later, leading to speculation, searches and a reward offered. Liberal Leader Rana Bokhari will introduce the mystery guest at 11 a.m. at the Manitoba Legislature. The Liberals are feeling pretty good about themselves after it was revealed in a recent poll the party is running ahead of the governing NDP but behind the Tories, mere months before the provincial election.

Day off for Canada: The Canadian squad isn’t slated to play today at the World Junior Hockey Championship in Helsinki. The defending champions picked up a 3-2 shootout victory over the Swiss on Tuesday, and now have a regulation win, an overtime win and a loss so far at the tournament, putting them in second place in Group A with five points. Canada plays group Sweden on Thursday. In Group A action today, the United States faces Switzerland, while Sweden takes on Denmark.

Changes to airport eats: The Salisbury House and Gondola Pizza are no longer part of the dining delights at the Richardson International Airport terminal building. The two iconic brands are being replaced by True Burger and Freshii, respectively. Skylights Lounge is also replacing the Upper Crust sandwich shop. #earthquake: No one was hurt and there were no reports of damage following a moderate earthquake struck near Victoria, B.C., late Tuesday night. The quake struck at 11:39 p.m. PST about 20 kilometres north of Victoria and was felt across much of southern British Columbia. Natural Resources Canada said the quake measured 4.3 while the U.S. Geological Survey placed the magnitude at 4.8. READ MORE

On Dec. 30, 1913: The Manitoba Free Press reported that in Winnipeg, a full investigation into alleged irregularities in the recent civic election had been ordered by city council. A large German colony was planned for the area of Hollywood, Man., with over 500 immigrants expected to begin arriving in the spring of 1914. In the U.S., a bumper crop worth $10 billion in products made 1913 very profitable for middlemen but many farmers would have trouble covering the cost of living.
