Case before jury: Jury deliberations are set to begin today in the grisly rape and strangling of Elizabeth Lafantaisie, 73, in February 2011. Thomas Brine, 29, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder. Crown attorney Brian Bell summed up the evidence against Brine in a 20-minute closing, saying it is clear Brine is guilty. But defence lawyer Bruce Bonney says his client is the victim of shoddy police work. READ MORE
Dangerous way to hunt: The Manitoba Wildlife Federation is calling on provincial conservation officials to get tough on those who illegally hunt at night using spotlights. The organization says bullets flying at night will only lead to injuries to innocent people, and pointed to a Winnipegosis woman who was asleep in bed when a shot was inadvertently fired through her window and into a cabinet. U of M open house: The University of Manitoba will hold its annual open house for high school students Wednesday and Thursday. Info Days is an open house that allows students to learn about academic programs, supports and the student experience through mini-lectures, faculty presentations, campus tours and info fair where they can meet current students as well as faculty and staff, the university said in a news release. This year 3,226 students are expected to attend over the two days – 31 schools are registered for Wednesday, and 42 schools for Thursday.
Liberal promises: Manitoba Liberal Leader Rana Bokhari is making a health funding announcement this morning at 10:30 a.m. at the Manitoba Legislature. The provincial election is set for April 19.
