Your forecast: The heat wave has been delayed a day. Environment Canada now says we won’t have temperatures in the single minus digits until Saturday. And it’s shaping up to be an unusually mild weekend — but first things first. Today, expect a cloudy sky, a 30 percent chance of flurries, a light south wind and high of -11 C. Expect much the same Thursday, although it will be slightly colder at -15 C. The sun returns Friday and the mercury rises to -11 C, while Saturday we can expect snow as the temperatures rises to -1 C. Sunday will be another sunny one, with a high of -6 C.

Hero mom saves daughter: Early Monday morning, Kristin Hiebert withstood the pain of two broken arms, a broken neck, broken ribs and a broken leg to crawl up a snow-covered embankment to get help to save her daughter Avery, 4, after their vehicle went off the road on Highway 23 between Brandon and Killarney. Kristen, 26, and Avery had spent the night outside, possibly for as much as 11 hours.
Historic homicide case still open: RCMP laid a second-degree murder charge four months ago against Lee Norman Pischke, 50, of the RM of Grahamdale, in the death of 80-year-old Michael Kalanza who went missing in 1985. However, RCMP investigators still don’t consider the case closed. READ MORE
Still paying for Plessis: The cost for the Plessis underpass has increased yet again, according to an administrative report to the city’s executive policy committee. The price tag is now $87.5 million. That’s an increase of $2.1 million from the last increase reported in June. The project was originally budgeted at $77 million in December 2011 but jumped to $83.8 million in March of 2015 and then to $85.4 million in June, 2015. READ MORE

Good luck, good curling: The Scotties Tournament of Hearts provincial women’s curling championship slides out of the hack this morning at the Sun Gro Centre in Beausejour. Sixteen teams will participate in the championship, which culminates with the final at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Last year’s champion, Jennifer Jones, isn’t in the field because she won the national title, so it’s wide open this weekend. The Manitoba champions will join Jones at next month’s Canadian Scotties in Grande Prairie, Alta.
The Witness Blanket: The artist behind The Witness Blanket, a major art project created as a national monument to the children affected by Indian residential schools, speaks tonight at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights at 7 p.m. Victoria artist Carey Newman (Ha-Yalth-Kin-Geme) is the creator of the art installation on display at the CMHR until the end of June.
Manitoba economy: The economic outlook for Manitoba often depends on who is speaking. A more objective view of Manitoba’s economy could come tonight, when RBC’s Chief Economist, Craig Wright, shares his take on the Manitoba economy at RBC’s 2016 Economic Outlook dinner at the Metropolitan Entertainment Centre, 281 Donald St., beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Brazeau mystery: Canadian senator Patrick Brazeau is recovering from surgery and is expected to survive after being injured in an incident at his home in western Quebec. He arrived at the hospital about 1 a.m. Tuesday after police went to his home about 10 p.m. Monday night. It is not clear how he was injured, although police have said the incident is not criminal in nature. Brazeau has had legal trouble but was given an absolute discharge on an assault charge last year. The senator has also been caught in an illegal expense scandal.

Postmedia: The owner of two newspapers in each of Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver laid off about 90 people and are merging their news rooms to slash costs in the midst of mounting revenue losses. Postmedia CEO Paul Godfrey said the decline in print advertising revenue since the Sun Media acquisition drove the changes. Former Winnipeg Free Press editor Margo Goodhand, who had been running the Edmonton Journal, was one of 35 people let go in that city. READ MORE

On Jan. 20, 1956: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that in Toronto, a 23-year-old truck driver and father of two had been charged with the rape and killing of a 13-year-old girl. “The slaying provoked fresh cries for immediate action by government officials to deal with the recent wave of sex crimes in the province,” according to the newspaper. A Manitoba cold snap was forecast to last all weekend. In Winnipeg at the Western Agricultural Conference, farm leaders were split over the allocation of boxcars carrying Canadian grain. Canada’s government halted shipments of arms to the Middle East. In New York, 20th Century Fox unveiled its revolutionary 55-millimetre Cinemascope motion picture process.
