Aiming at high earners: If elected on April 19, Manitoba’s NDP government announced Tuesday, it plans to create a fourth – higher — tax bracket. Anyone earning more than $170,000 per year would have that income taxed at a rate of 20.9 per cent. Currently, the highest Manitoba provincial tax rate is 17.4 per cent. That rate would continue for those who earn between $67,001 and $170,000. READ MORE

Right to die: After being diagnosed with stage four breast cancer last month, 90-year-old Jess Bowness stopped taking her insulin so that she could die on her own terms. Because the law on medically assisted dying won’t be in place until June 6, it took 26 agonizing days for Bowman to die. READ MORE

Fuel feud: The public is invited to join students and University of Winnipeg faculty today to discuss whether the University of Winnipeg should become the first university in Canada to end its investments in fossil fuels. Many students allege that investing and profiting in fossil fuel contradicts the university’s stated values of sustainability, social justice and Indigenization. The event takes place in Convocation Hall on the second floor of Wesley Hall at the U of W’s main campus from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. READ MORE

Largest beaded artwork: The creator of the largest Métis beaded artwork in the world visits the Canadian Museum for Human Rights’ Indigenous Perspectives gallery today. Jennine Krauchi created a seven-metre tall “octopus bag” (also known as a “fire bag”) covered in a traditional Métis floral beadwork pattern, using thousands of antique fur-trade era beads from the mid-1800s. The finished work weighs over 27 kilograms, and is displayed as part of an exhibit about the displacement of Métis people who lived in communities on government road allowances.

Suffragette stamp: Winnipeg’s Tétro Design created the stamp released Tuesday by Canada Post commemorating 100 years of women first having the vote in Canada. Partner Andrea Tétrault said the stamp’s design is “simple and symbolic” yet “loud and proud.” A new $1 coin was also unveiled on Tuesday. READ MORE

Heritage Classic a winner: It’s too early to predict the economic impact of Winnipeg hosting the NHL’s Heritage Classic and legends outdoor hockey games in October at Investors Group Field, but hotel rooms are already starting to fill up with reservations while restaurants and bars are hoping they will also be able to cash in. The legends game, featuring alumni players from the Winnipeg Jets and Edmonton Oilers is on Oct. 22 and the regular season NHL game on Oct. 23. READ MORE

Balfour, the first lord of the admiralty, criticized Col. Winston Churchill’s attack on the naval administration.
