Good morning!

Your forecast: It’s fair to say the good people of southern Manitoba have had some wonderful autumn weather to date, but that’s left us with lofty expectations as another weekend approaches. Well, the Environment Canada forecast won’t disappoint. We’re in for a sunny day and a high temperature of 16 C today, although there’s a 30 per cent chance of a morning shower on a much cooler, breezier Thursday. Expect a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 10 C projected for Friday, but the weekend should be dandy — blue skies and temperatures of 11 C and 17 C, respectively, Saturday and Sunday.

Weird case hits court: There was no sign of convicted con artist Shelly Chartier when Free Press reporter Mike McIntyre and photographer Joe Bryksa went to her home in Easterville on Tuesday, the day before her sentencing hearing. She pleaded guilty in August to seven offences, including fraud and extortion in an elaborate scheme that included conning a pro basketball player and a California-based actress, but has been allowed to live at home until sentencing. The hearing, located at the local community hall, begins this morning. READ MORE

Fahmy lashes out at Harper: The former Cairo bureau chief for Al-Jazeera met with reporters Tuesday in Toronto, saying he feels he has a responsibility to highlight all the mistakes Canada’s government made when trying to secure his release from an Egyptian prison. “While you hear citizens in Canada and around the world clearly understood the urgency of the situation we faced in prison in Egypt, the Harper government did not,” he said. Mohamed Fahmy and two colleagues were arrested in 2013. He was later convicted and sentenced to three years in prison after a court accused him of airing what the court described as “false news.” READ MORE

Good weather buoys water bus: After some terrific summer weather and acceptable river levels, the Winnipeg business Splash Dash at The Forks had a great 2015 season, its owner said Tuesday. Gord Cartwright said it was “one of the best years I’ve ever had” and he promised to be back on the water in 2016. READ MORE

Inside the white tent: Premier Greg Selinger will be up close with the horses at noon today as he meets the two-legged and four-legged stars of the Cavalia spectacle Odysseo, the equine/acrobatic/music show under the huge tent at 1284 Wilkes Avenue. The staff will also present a cheque of $20,000 to two Winnipeg charities, and work with 50 lucky children who are particularly interested in dance and gymnastics.

Uber eyeing Winnipeg: The old joke goes: “Call me a taxi! Okay, you’re a taxi.” The Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce has a guest today who doesn’t want to call, or be called, a taxi. Chris Schafer is the public policy manager for Uber Canada, which operates a mobile app that lets consumers with smartphones arrange a trip with Uber drivers who use their own cars. Licensed cabbies hate getting undercut by Uber, understandably, but service has been popular with riders in many cities. Free Press business writer Martin Cash will interview Schafer this morning and ask about plans to bring Uber to Winnipeg.

Dramatic Game 5: It’s do-or-die time for the Toronto Blue Jays this afternoon as they host the Texas Rangers in the fifth and deciding game of the American League Division Series. After the Rangers won a pair of games in Toronto to begin the series, the Blue Jays bounced back with a pair of victories in Arlington, Tex., to knot the series 2-2. Game time is 3 p.m. CDT on Sportsnet.

Good night on Broadway: Super slick Danish winger Nikolaj Ehlers scored a beauty for Winnipeg on Tuesday night as the Jets dumped the host New York Rangers 4-1 at Madison Square Garden. Camped on the point on the Jets power play, the 19-year-old rookie took a pass, skated in and let a cannon go that beat goalie Henrik Lundqvist for his first-ever NHL goal. Winnipeg finished a four-game road trip with an impressive 3-1 record. The Jets home-opener is Friday night at 7 p.m. against the Calgary Flames at MTS Centre. READ MORE
