Good morning!
Your forecast: This isn’t a trick. Just be grateful for the treats Environment Canada says we’ll be receiving this Halloween weekend. Ok, today looks bad. We’ve already received about five millimetres of rain overnight and more is expected to fall today, with a daytime high of just 6 C. You can get past this. Just think of it as the scariest house in the neighbourhood you and your friends ran by every Halloween night to get to the friendly folks down the block who handed out a pile of candy bars to every kid at their doorstep. That’s what’s coming our way — a pillowcase full of goodies, beginning Thursday with a sunny day and a high of 6 C followed by a mix of sun and cloud Friday and a high of 8 C. Then, Saturday will be spectacular, with sunshine, a daytime high of 13 C and single digits when the little ghosts and goblins hit the streets. And Sunday, when Kit Kats are the breakfast bar of choice, the temperature rises to 12 C by mid day under a bright blue sky.

SubmittedShooting victim Calli Vanderaa and her father Corey.
Dad of shot teen speaks out: Calli Vanderaa, 16, had stopped with friends at a convenience store for a slushy drink last Friday night when she was shot while in a parked vehicle. When given the devastating news by city police, her dad, Corey, simply didn’t believe it, he told the Free Press. Investigators say the girl was an innocent victim and have laid criminal charges against two men, alleging they broke in to an RCMP officer’s car Friday night, stole the gun and then fired it in the convenience store parking lot a few hours later after getting into an argument with a group of youths. Fooling the scam artist: A couple of fraudsters trying to con a man out of $1,000 in an income-tax scam were instead fooled themselves by Winnipeg tax specialist Nate Brideau of FBC, a Winnipeg farm and small-business tax company. Brideau returned a call to someone identifying themselves as an employee of the Canada Revenue Agency and played along with two fraud artists for more than 45 minutes in two separate calls — recording the entire conversations — before identifying himself and having the con artists hang up on him. R-R-R-R: Pirates will be eager to attend today’s open house at a 4R Winnipeg Deport because, according to a joke that’s popular in elementary schoolyards, a pirate’s favourite letter of the alphabet is “R”. A 4R Depot is a place where residents (landlubbers as well as pirates) can drop off material they no longer have use for, but could be recycled, reused, composted or resold. The first 4R Winnipeg Depot will be located on Brady Road and is expected to open in late 2015. The second such depot, the Pacific Avenue 4R, is the subject of today’s come-and-go open house from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Cindy Klassen Recreation Complex, 999 Sargent Ave.
Halloween, circa 1900: Winnipeg’s Dalnavert Museum is summoning forth the supernatural-obsessed Victorian era with an unusual series of Halloween tours tonight, Thursday and Friday evenings. Lights will be turned low to give the historic mansion a ghostly ambiance, including stained glass that will be lit from the outside. Visitors this week will learn about the fortune-telling games such as séances popular at long-ago Halloweens, and enjoy treats from the time, including candy apples and cider. Dalnavert House, built in 1895, is entirely furnished in late Victorian style. Tours start at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $16 plus tax. READ MORE

JOHN WOODS / WINNIPEG FREE PRESSEvander Kane and Andrew Ladd.
Moving on: Winnipeg Jets captain Andrew Ladd spoke after the Jets morning skate at the MTS Centre on Tuesday morning and responded to accusations made by former teammate Evander Kane — who’s now a member of the Buffalo Sabres — in a story that appeared this week in The Hockey News. In the story, Kane charged that his Jets teammates and the organization didn’t have his back before he was traded to the Sabres last February. Ladd spoke about his team as a family and said he thought the players and organization did support Kane. “We’re having a great time in here and we’ve moved on and maybe he should, too,” Ladd said. What’s in a name: A Morden city councillor trying to get the local senior A men’s hockey team to change its Morden Redskins name had her motion defeated at a council meeting earlier this month. Heather Francis said she brought forward the motion because the Redskins name is offensive to both indigenous and non-indigenous people. She wanted council to send the team a letter requesting to change its name. Team general manager Brent Meleck said the Redskins team, which has won the most championships in the South Eastern Manitoba Hockey League’s 64-year history, is not changing its name. READ MORE
