Good morning!

Your forecast: There’s been no shortage of September sunshine, but we just might see a bolt of lightning and hear the crack of thunder late this evening and into Thursday morning. Environment Canada is calling for a cloudy day and a high of 17 C, with a 60 per cent chance of showers tonight and the risk of an overnight thunderstorm. There’s a 30 per cent chance of rain Thursday and a daytime high of 19 C. The sky clears Friday and the mercury soars to 25 C, while Saturday looks near perfect with sunshine and a high of 28 C. And we’ll gladly take a sunny Sunday with a daytime high of 20 C.

Feds to end Kapyong fight: Prime Minister Stephen Harper confirmed Tuesday his government won’t appeal a recent court decision on the fate of Kapyong Barracks. The Federal Court of Appeal last month upheld a lower-court ruling that said Ottawa failed to consult First Nations when it closed down the former military base more than a decade ago and made plans to dispose of it. Some aboriginal groups see its potential as an urban reserve — with stores, businesses and housing. Late Tuesday, one Manitoba chief hinted talks between bands and federal staff are well underway and a deal could be reached within a year. READ MORE

Guilty plea in nightclub killing: A city teen pleaded guilty Tuesday to manslaughter and was given an adult sentence of six years in prison for his role in the shooting death of 23-year-old Rustom Paclipan in May 2014 outside Opera Ultralounge on Main Street. The teen provided the gun that was used to kill Paclipan, but claimed in court he was only following orders from gang leaders and thought the weapon would be used to intimidate, not kill. Two other men remain in custody and have yet to face murder charges in court. READ MORE

More horses, of course: As Winnipeg audiences stampede to Cavalia’s Odysseo, seven performances have been added under the White Big Top on Kenaston Boulevard. Red carpet: The movie Hyena Road screens tonight at the Centennial Concert Hall. It’s a Canadian war drama filmed in Manitoba, Afghanistan and Jordan about troops enduring Taliban attacks while building a crucial highway link. Movie stars expected tonight will be Paul Gross, Rossif Sutherland, Christine Horne and Allan Hawco. Other important people will be Premier Greg Selinger and Hartley Richardson. Can you and I attend? Unless we got a formal invitation to tonight’s lah-dee-dah screening, we regular folks must wait until Hyena Road opens in theatres Oct. 9.

Supermoon: Here’s some advance notice to plan a backyard party for Sunday night, when a total lunar eclipse coincides with a “supermoon.” The celestial action starts at 9:11 p.m. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth is between the full moon and the sun. A “supermoon” just means the moon looks 14 per cent bigger since it’s a bit closer to the Earth than usual. The combination hasn’t happened in 32 years, and won’t for another 18 years. Of course, all bets are off if it’s cloudy.

Coywolves perhaps not so coy: Recent attacks on pets in the East Beaches area north of Winnipeg are being blamed on wolves, but now some fear the animals responsible are coyote-wolf hybrids. Officials from the province say this is impossible to determine without proper DNA analysis from one of the animals. Residents in the area say the animals don’t sound like wolves, leading to the fear they are hybrids, sometimes called coywolves. READ MORE

Suspended teacher back at work: No one is commenting officially on Kelvin High School teacher Brad Badiuk being back at work this semester, though questions remain what the Winnipeg School Division did when it became public Badiuk, on his personal Facebook page, made incendiary comments about indigenous people last winter. The WSD had suspended a teacher; Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs Grand Chief Derek Nepinak sued the division; but Badiuk was not named publicly in those actions and is now back at work. READ MORE

Yogi Berra: Legendary New York Yankees catcher and manager Yogi Berra died late Tuesday at the age of 90. The Hall of Famer was a 15-time all-Star and won 10 league championships with the Yankees. The man was a quote machine, with some of his most famous ‘Yogi-isms’ – like ‘It ain’t over til it’s over’ and It’s déjà vu all over again’ — becoming rooted in everyday speech. READ MORE

#NewMuppetPlotlines: The brand new The Muppets show made its debut Tuesday, not as a children’s program but as a mock reality show mostly for grownups. Now, the Twitter world is going nuts with suggested plotlines, including Kermit the Frog waking up in bed with Bob Newhart, the Swedish Chef winning Hells Kitchen and the Count getting arrested in Las Vegas casinos for counting cards.

On Sept. 23, 1904: The Manitoba Free Press reported that Company F of Grand Forks had been mustered out and the city was without a military organization of any sort. George Piper, whose body was found on the CPR tracks near Rennie, was believed to have been murdered and his body placed on the tracks to conceal the foul play. Winnipeg topped the list of cities in North America for number of buildings built in the previous eight months, ahead of New York and the Bronx, Chicago, and Philadelphia.
