Happy Black History Month!

Happy Wednesday, and happy Black History Month!

This morning I had the pleasure of attending the Black History Month kick-off at City Hall. It made me so happy to participate in this morning’s festivities. My friend Nadia Thompson, chair of the Black History Manitoba group, addressed the attendees.

“This year we are going with a theme: Black resistance. Remember. Recognize. Educate,” she said, as the small group in the mayor’s foyer cheered.

I am grateful that we can take part in, celebrate, and educate ourselves thanks to a whole slate of events happening around the city (and virtually) this month. One event I am particularly interested in is First Fridays, Black History Month edition at the Manitoba Museum happening this Friday. The event boasts a vendor market and live music and entertainment. It runs from 4 to 9 p.m. at 190 Rupert Avenue and has free admission.

There is so much all of us can and ought to do to celebrate Black History Month in February and every month. Support Black-owned businesses, read books by Black authors, follow more Black content creators on social media, commit to learn about Black History.

There is so much that we haven’t been taught, and it’s up to us to educate ourselves about racism, systemic racism, and anti-racism.

If you’d like more information, our friends at Black History Manitoba have set up a Black History Month — Winnipeg Facebook page for local news and events. Go check it out!

Have a wonderful week.

Ben Waldman writes about Michigan-born Chell Osuntade who is following his post-punk passion in Winnipeg. Osuntade is the frontman for Fold Paper, a project that distills his musical upbringing into a dizzying blend of punk, indie and garage rock. Read the whole story here.

Manitoba folk-rock group Indian City, which was headed by the late, great Vince Fontaine until his death just over a year ago, has earned a Juno Award nomination for contemporary Indigenous artist or group of the year! Read Alan Small’s story on the nomination — and other Juno nominees with connections to Manitoba.

Gabrielle Piché writes a delicious story about Curry Up Indian Kitchen. The restaurant will be opening its second Winnipeg location in the coming months on Grant Avenue. Picture it: a Subway-style spot where you order toppings for a sandwich, except the menu doesn’t offer sandwiches — it has burritos, tacos, bowls and quesadillas with an Indian twist. Read the story here.
