Two killed in Toronto: Police are investigating after a man shot 14 people, reportedly killing one, on a busy Toronto street last night. The alleged shooter was found dead nearby after the attack. There was no word from police, who exchanged gunfire with the man, on a possible motive. READ MORE

Closing arguments: A judge will hear closing arguments in the trial of Junior Sesay, who allegedly stabbed his brother’s girlfriend more than 70 times in May 2017. The defence will argue the former university basketball player is not criminally responsible for the attack on University of Winnipeg player Lena Wenke. Katie May reports. READ MORE

Walking tall: Canada’s Walk of Fame announced 10 people, including actor Seth Rogen, skaters Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, former astronaut Chris Hadfield and the late Leonard Cohen will be inducted. Defenceman gets dough: An arbitrator has ruled Jets defenceman Jacob Trouba will earn US$5.5 million on a one-year contract this season. Sunday night, the Jets announced forward Brandon Tanev, who was set to have his arbitration hearing this week, inked a one-year, US$1.15-million contract. READ MORE

On July 23, 1977: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that at least four private security guards were to appear in court in connection with the shootings of eight strikers during a demonstration at Robin Hood Multifoods Ltd. in Montreal. Five Egyptian planes were shot down in raids against Libyan targets. Only one Canadian premier, Richard Hatfield of New Brunswick, joined with prime minister Pierre Trudeau’s suggestion that provinces reject Quebec premier René Lévesque’s proposal that English Canadians moving to Quebec be allowed to attend English-language schools.
