Hometown pride at the Grammys

Happy Wednesday.

I want to start out this newsletter by acknowledging that I made a big, fat, grammatical error in my column this week. I wrote “her and I” instead of “she and I” twice. Oops! I don’t think I’ll make that mistake again, but I’m sure there will be others… thank you to everyone who took time out of their day to school me about this.

Anyway, on with the newsletter!

This morning on my way home from driving my daughter to school, I heard Rhonda Head, a classical opera singer from Opaskwayak Cree Nation, on the Ace Burpee Show. I only caught a bit of the segment, but from what I heard of the interview, it was lovely.

A photo of Head holding up a Winnipeg Jets flag at the Grammy Awards on Sunday is making its rounds on social media. The photo shows Head, decked out in a fancy black dress and long, beautiful, beaded earrings, holding up the Jets flag against the backdrop of the Grammy stage.

This isn’t the first time Head has made a statement at music’s biggest (North American) night. Last year, she and two other women held up an “Every Child Matters” flag on the red carpet.

In the part of the interview that I heard, Head was describing how she learned to sing opera in Cree, describing the how the sounds of the language lend beautifully to the music. Then the conversation turned to Burpee suggesting to Head that maybe one day she’ll be singing O Canada in Cree at a Jets game.

Both excitedly put that out into the universe before the segment ended.

Maybe it’ll happen one day…

Have a great week, everyone!

Good news this week

Speaking of the Grammys, Ben Waldman writes about the shoutout that singer Bonnie Raite gave to Winnipeg musical group the Bros. Landreth during her acceptance speech at Sunday’s awards… I don’t want to spoil this awesome story by writing any more, so check it out here.

Katie May writes about Michael Malets, a former Ukrainian soldier, and current electrical engineer, who joined the fight against Russia before deciding to start a new life in Winnipeg recently. Malets, who arrived in Winnipeg just two weeks ago, had the first official ice climb of the season on an 18-metre ice tower Sunday afternoon at Festiglace, the annual ice-climbing party for members and guests of the St. Boniface chapter of the Alpine Club of Canada.
