I blame it on the ice cream

Good morning, folks.

I hope you all found a way to enjoy the Victoria Day long weekend.

I know you Winnipeg Jets fans had some happy moments.

I’m still hearing from friends about Sunday’s Game 3 — but not just about their excitement over how the local NHL team rallied from a 4-1 deficit to eventually win in overtime and take a 3-0 stranglehold in their playoff series with Edmonton. The messages are instead filled with incredulity over the fact that I left my perch in the Bell MTS Place pressbox and headed home after the Oilers had taken a three-goal lead in the game.

Say what?!

You did what, Steve?!

Yep, in what had been a pretty boring game, I made a decision to hit the road after Jujhar Khaira scored five minutes into the final frame to give the visitors what looked like a commanding lead.

“Beating the traffic?” grinned Mike McIntyre as I prepared to make my exit.

Old habits die hard, Mike.

In fact, it was mostly my tummy that urged me to take my leave. As many of you know, I have a sweet tooth, and the treat I like most to satisfy that craving is ice cream. Earlier Sunday, someone had given me a drumstick after grocery shopping and it was just waiting for me to get home.

Giving no thought to the possibility of a comeback, I didn’t even tune in to the game on my way home. Frankly, I’m not even sure how to get a radio station on my new SUV: does anyone listen to radio anymore?

After parking in my garage, I checked my phone and had a text from Mike that read: “Look what you’ve done! You leave and they come to life!”

Figuring the Jets had scored a goal or two, I checked my Sportsnet app to see they had actually scored three goals and tied the game.

As Yogi Berra said: “It ain’t over till it’s over.”

You all know what happened after that: Nicolaj Ehlers scored what might have gone down as the most memorable goal in Jets history. At least it was until the next night, when Kyle Connor scored in triple overtime to give the Jets a sweep of the series.

Let the record show that despite Game 4 ending hours after my bedtime — it basically started at my bedtime — I was still awake when Connor scored 6:52 into the sixth frame Tuesday morning. Didn’t need any “OMG, you went to sleep?!” messages.

Let the record also show that I was sitting comfortably on my couch enjoying that drumstick when Ehlers scored.

And don’t be too hard on me, now: let the record also show that I picked the Jets to beat the Oilers and a few of you sent me messages saying I was nuts. And not the good kind, like on a drumstick.

Our Coverage

• Early edition: Mike McIntyre dropped by my office on Tuesday this week, instead of Wednesday, to record our Jetcetera podcast. In Episode 66, Mike and I discuss the sweep that nobody saw coming and where it all went right for the Winnipeg Jets and wrong for the Edmonton Oilers. We also chat about how it’s unfortunate fans couldn’t have been there to witness it; and I provide a few gardening tips and Mike sets a running goal;

Mea culpa: You can all put the pitchforks away now, as Mike has also fessed up in this column that he was wrong. Very, very wrong. You may recall, he picked the Jets to lose to the Oilers in five games. Whoops;

How sweep it is: And, Jeff Hamilton has this look back at the Jets’ dispatching of the high-flying Edmonton Oilers in six days, what it means to the franchise, and what it does for the team going forward in this year’s NHL playoffs.

What we’re reading

Same old: Sportsnet’s Mark Spector writes a column on how despite gallant efforts, the Edmonton Oilers continue to find ways to lose in playoffs;

Stephen A. sounds off: ESPN commentator is baffled as to how the Oilers were swept out of the Stanley Cup playoffs;

Cathal Kelly: Globe and Mail columnist opines that if the Oilers want to be a real playoff contender, they need a clear diagnosis of what’s broken.
