Jets game snacks and dessert for breakfast

Good morning, folks.

A reader of this mailing sent a note last week to tell me about their snacking habits during Jets games. I sometimes think this should be a food and bikes newsletter, instead of sports.

The note described how this particular fan heads straight to the kitchen for a popcorn fix after their stationary bike ride — all while watching the action on the ice, I presume. The author added that they’ve got the movie-house flavour down pat. OK, that caught my attention.

I’ll let them do the honour of describing the ritual:

“Food grade collapsible silicon Salbree on Amazon. Was a hot air guy for years, but too dry even with melted butter. This one’s easy: fill bottom of container with kernels, top with oil (canola or coconut) and salt, then microwave for approximately three minutes… it comes out movie-theatre moist… bought one for each family member.”

Personally, I have a domed Betty Crocker Movie Night popcorn maker that I like very much, but this Salbree thing looks interesting. My good buddy Dillan would say both are blasphemous — that popcorn should be made in hot oil in a large pot — but I’m not that hardcore. I will say that I’ve sworn off the packaged microwave stuff.

Our Salbree advocate was also curious whether other Jets fans have a go-to snack during games, so I told them I would ask.

It would have been a late-night snack last night — man, these 9 p.m. starts are lame — but in general what are your favourite snacks during games?

And since we’re on the subject of food: some of you joined me in getting a chuckle out of Jon Hamm’s most recent Skip the Dishes commercial where he is advocating Bressert. He uses cheescake — I’m not a fan — in the shtick, but it got me wondering what would be the quintessential Bressert.

Let’s exclude pastries, because who hasn’t had those for breakfast?

Cheescake seems too nighttime to me — I’m gonna go with a bread pudding, with a vanilla topping… and yes, raisins.

One final confession: I spent a lot of time during the Super Bowl looking at my phone instead of the TV. Yes, I was mostly looking at bikes again. But good news, I bought a new one Monday night — remind me to tell you all about it — so, chances are I paid closer attention to the Jets game last night.

Don’t worry, though — if I didn’t, I know Mike McIntyre did and he has a full report here.

As always, folks, you can reach me by replying to this mailing or by sending me an email here.

Our Coverage

Let’s talk: Along with his game story, Mike has a column on what a devastating day for the Winnipeg sports media landscape Tuesday was. Shuttering TSN 1290 just a week after their mental health initiative, during a pandemic, and right after cashing in big government subsidies, is a terrible look for the media giant Bell. But it also leaves sports fans in a great sports city like Winnipeg without an all-sports station;

Delay of game: Mike Sawatzky has a story on how the loosening of provincial health guidelines doesn’t do much to get local hockey back on ice.

What we’re reading

Take a seat new guy: Cam Atkinson was very to the point while discussing Patrik Laine getting benched;

Black History Month: Sportsnet’s David Singh has a story on why the Negro Leagues story is more important now than ever;

Cathal Kelly: Globe and Mail columnist writes, forget Patrick Mahomes — Tom Brady was only competing against himself.
