Join us for a holiday cookie swap

Remember last month when I was bemoaning seasonal creep?

Well, today I’m actively adding to the creep by inviting Dish subscribers to send in their favourite holiday cookie recipes for a chance to participate in a Free Press Cookie Swap.

This will be an in-person event held in the Free Press newsroom on a yet-to-be-determined date prior to the festive season. We’ll swap treats, share recipes and take some photos, which will run in the paper for our annual Homemade Holidays series.

We’re looking for 12 recipes in total, the more inventive the better (shortbread and sugar cookies are great, but I’d love to see what other kinds of fun desserts you’ve got up your sleeve). These can be goodies you make every year for Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year’s or any other festive celebration.

Fill out the submission form here to share a recipe. Don’t forget to include why the recipe is an important part of your holiday traditions. The deadline for submissions is Friday, Oct. 24.

Submitters with recipes selected for the Cookie Swap will be contacted directly with more details. We’re also working on a very cute Homemade Holidays keepsake for participants and interested readers.

Stay tuned and happy (very early) holiday baking!

Tasty tidbits

🇩🇪The good cheer continues this weekend at Little Brown Jug Brewing Co. (336 William Ave.) as the downtown brewery hosts its very own Oktoberfest Saturday starting at noon. A quartet of German-inspired small-batch brews will be poured all day (in steins, no less), a band will be ramping up the gemütlichkeit with German music, there will be an Oktoberfest-themed food menu, yodeling, pretzel-tossing contests and more. It’s free to come and go, but tables of four or six can be reserved for a small fee here.

🍻 Grab your tickets for the upcoming UnCommon Pours beer tasting event at The Forks on Friday, Oct. 24. Gather around an outdoor patio fire while Common craft beer curator Hailey Tennant guides visitors through a series of seasonal fall brews. Tickets are $42.90 and space is limited.

🥣 One-of-a-kind bowls signed and designed by A-list celebrities are up for grabs during Harvest Manitoba’s Empty Bowls fundraising auction. Dolly Parton, John Travolta, Whoopi Goldberg and Katy Perry are among the 30 celebs who’ve donated a bowl to help fight food insecurity in Manitoba. Other items on the auction block include local staycations, event tickets and culinary experiences. Online bidding takes place here and closes Oct. 18.

Ben: In an effort to expand the weekly dinner menu, we tried out this recipe for Cajun chicken stew from Pepper Bowl, and it was a big hit. My partner tweaked the recipe a bit, adding a large carrot and subtracting one stalk of celery, and using chicken breast instead of thigh, and we served it over rice. It’s easy to make and is an ideal dish for cooler temps.

Eva: Hungry for some local music? We just launched a new series called Listen Up, which highlights recently released and forthcoming albums from Manitoba musicians. The first instalment includes an interview with “yearn-core” band Living Hour and covers releases from JayWood, Leith Ross, Fontine, William Prince, Begonia, sundayclub and The Bros. Landreth. It’s a bountiful season for made-in-Manitoba music!
