It’s the final week of school at my other job, so I’m taking the week off for this newsletter; but I’d still like to share a reconciliaction of the week that is truly amazing.
As I am writing this, Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen is in space, travelling to the moon and back on the Artemis II mission. On his shoulder is his personal mission patch, an image each astronaut creates which carries their personal goals for their work.
For this mission, Hansen asked Henry Guimond of Sagkeeng First Nation right here in Manitoba to design his mission patch, which incorporates the Anishinaabe Seven Sacred Teachings, clan animals and the teachings each symbolize in a heptagon shape. The patch also includes an image of the Grandmother Moon and Hansen’s astronaut wings.

In a 2024 vlog, Hansen said of the image:
“The patch reminds me to aspire to walk on this journey with respect, love, courage, humility, honesty, wisdom, and truth… They are just simple values that we can all resonate with and can use as a guiding star to help us live better lives on this planet.”
Incredible.
