A few years ago, I embarked on a very serious and important investigation to find Winnipeg’s best hot dog. I declared the bacon cheese dog from North Star Drive-In (531 McGregor St.) the city’s top dog after sampling franks from six different local wiener vendors.
This summer I’m searching for Winnipeg’s best veggie burgers. And I want your input!
Meat-free burgers are a dime a dozen these days thanks to the rise of plant-based products designed to mimic the look and taste of beef. Impossible Burgers are fine, but I’d rather focus on vegan or vegetarian patties that are made in-house. Priority will also be given to Winnipeg-owned and -operated establishments over chains.
The only other stipulation is that the restaurant/food truck/burger stand must be located within city limits.
I won’t be able to try every local veggie burger, but I’m happy to include additional recommendations in the final review.
Respond to this email to vote for your favourite veggie burg and let me know if there are other foods I should review in the future.

🇵🇭 Fans of Filipino fare — get thee to The Forks Market ASAP, as Basta! Filipino Kitchen is closing for good today. Basta! is the brainchild of chef Norm Pastorin, who opened the kiosk at the market two and a half years ago. A post on Instagram notes Pastorin is closing Basta! For “personal reasons” — no word on where or when the award-winning chef will surface next.

Ben: For Father’s Day I was taken to Bluestone Cottage for brunch — you may have heard the breakfast/lunch spot, along with the adjacent Alena Rustic Italian, recently underwent a change of ownership, with chef/founding partner Kelly Cattani taking over the reins and Wow Hospitality Concepts exiting its role there. I’m pleased to report the breakfasts are still top-notch — I scarfed down the traditional breakfast with great gusto after having wheezed my way through the 10K run at the Manitoba Marathon. And there were a lot of dads there, so seems as though brunch is gaining popularity when celebrating pop.
Eva: Shoutout to all the local breweries that have started selling beer in 355 ml cans. Tall boys are fun, but short cans are king in the summertime, when hot temperatures can make the last dregs uncomfortably soupy. Koozies and insulated tumblers help, but sometimes you just want less beer, ya know? Most local breweries — including Low Life, Sookram’s, Barn Hammer, Little Brown Jug, Nonsuch and Kilter — now have at least one product in a smaller can, many of which are also lighter beers.
