Soaking up summertime traditions

Happy Wednesday, and happy Pride week everyone!

Firstly, I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who reached out last week to offer kind words and share stories about how they honour late family members on their birthdays. Several people said they have full-on parties, and I love that!

This year, I ended up sneaking away by myself to Goodies Bakeshop during some evening errands — a place that has become a special place to remember my grandma — and I bought myself an Imperial cookie that I enjoyed by myself in my van in the parking lot. (That sounds sadder than I intended it… it was a nice, quiet moment.)

Speaking of treats, I tried roll kuchen (see recipe) for the first time last weekend. Apparently, it’s well known and beloved by many Manitobans. But if you don’t know what it is, it’s a deep-fried bread that goes perfectly with watermelon and syrup. The bread is a Mennonite summer tradition, and, if I am being honest, I feel I should have known about this sooner. My partner (and our daughter) is Mennonite.

In any case, I tried roll kuchen and it was delicious. Now, mine was store bought, which, I’m told, is nowhere near as good as homemade. (A couple of people even told me they’d never settle for store-bought roll kuchen! Ha!)

On the suggestion of several folks, I tried it with watermelon. It was fine, but I experimented with a few other combinations, and I liked it best with a little butter and a touch of powdered sugar. I have not heard anyone suggest doing this, so I feel a bit blasphemous deviating away from the corn syrup and watermelon suggestions. But it was good.

Do you have any summer food traditions? Send them my way. I want to hear all about them!

I hope you have a great week! Don’t forget to drink plenty of water and reapply your sunscreen, we’re in for some scorchers!

Good news this week

The CancerCare Manitoba Foundation received a $27-million donation — the largest philanthropic gift to a health-care organization in the province’s history — from the Paul Albrechtsen Foundation. The charity’s namesake, trucking magnate Paul Albrechtsen, died at age 88 in 2019, after leaving a legacy of philanthropic donations largely to Winnipeg hospitals in the last decade of his life. David Sanderson recently sat down with two separate Manitoba business owners. Dianna Upton is the “Di” behind Lady Di’s Snackers, and Jay Gagne is the founder of Main Event Munchies. Gagne discussed the twists and turns — OK, mostly the twists — associated with becoming a pretzel maven. Read the whole delicious story here.

Erik Pindera writes about how Mount Carmel Clinic will take over a community program meant to co-ordinate resources for families and others at risk in Winnipeg’s inner city, thanks to a funding boost from the province’s justice department. Read more.
