The Wrap: AI nudes at school, cop charged, nurse recruitment, local diver, and Winnipeg public access TV remembered

Good evening. Here’s a look at what our newsroom has been working on today:

'Very weird and messed up'

Winnipeg Police Service members attended Collège Béliveau, a Grade 9-12 high school in Windsor Park, on Wednesday as part of a child pornography investigation.

Reports were received of AI-generated nude photos circulating at the local high school.

Photos were gathered from students’ publicly accessible social media and then “explicitly altered,” according to a letter sent home by administrators at Collège Béliveau.

A group of Grade 10 students who witnessed uniformed officers arrive at the school described the aftermath of the midday visit as emotional, with classmates crying and expressing anger about the situation.

'There’s always bad seeds'

Staff at a Winnipeg bar called the police last Friday after a man they believed to be clearly impaired got in his car and drove away.

They did not realize the man was an off-duty police officer.

A 39-year-old member of the Winnipeg Police Service was arrested at a home a short time later, and has been charged with driving with a blood-alcohol content greater than .08 and driving while impaired.

'We are going to cast a wider net'

Manitoba’s former Progressive Conservative government said earlier this year that immigration and licensing processes had begun for 309 Filipino recruits who accepted offers to work as registered nurses, licensed practical nurse equivalents or aides.

But the number of arrivals since then is close to zero, NDP Premier Wab Kinew said today.

The government will continue efforts to bring those recruits to Manitoba, he said — but they’ll also be looking at other places around the globe to recruit staff.

'I’m just excited to come here and see what I can do'

Three of Manitoba’s best divers will flip, twirl and plunge into Pan Am Pool at the Winter Senior National Championships this weekend.

With the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics drawing closer, a good showing this weekend is critical for world-stage hopefuls and could qualify athletes for other international competitions this winter, including the World Aquatics world championships, which take place in Doha, Qatar, in February.

'It’s such a portrait of a specific community and a specific place in time'

If you’re a Winnipegger of a certain vintage, you might remember flicking on the TV and stumbling across the Pollock & Pollock Gossip Show, starring the brother-and-sister duo of “Nifty” Natalie Pollock and “Rockin’’ Ron Pollock.

Or maybe the heavy-metal sock puppets on Metal Inquisition, hosted anonymously by Terrible Dog and Fearless Pig.

These are among the colourful local heroes immortalized in Winnipeg Babysitter, artist Daniel Barrow’s hybrid curatorial/archival/expanded cinema project that documents the golden age of Winnipeg public-access television.
