'Manitoba must put its best foot forward to attract and retain doctors'
A recently recruited doctor is suing CancerCare Manitoba, claiming it reneged on an agreement that saw him abandon his job in Calgary and move to Winnipeg.
Dr. Maclean Thiessen, an oncologist specializing in breast and gastrointestinal cancer, filed a lawsuit against the provincial agency in the Court of King’s Bench on Aug. 20.
The doctor says he suffered “humiliation, embarrassment and damage to his professional reputation” because CancerCare provided “misleading, untruthful and/or inaccurate information” when it recruited him to work in the province.

'We want to support school divisions'
The Hanover school board made headlines in the spring after a group of parents wrote Manitoba Minister of Education, Nello Altomare to request the removal of six trustees over “discriminatory” behaviour.
The group raised concerns about trustee participation in an event organized to oppose LGBTTQ+ representation and gender diversity initiatives in schools — and a new hiring policy that community members allege was an attempt to reduce employee diversity.
As a result, the education minister has appointed an adviser to the division’s school board to provide advice on topics such as “when it’s necessary to involve yourself in hiring processes,” although the board will ultimately continue to make its own decisions.
Education reporter Maggie Macintosh takes a look at the situation.

The drone photographer captures stunning photos and videos of the city’s skyline, including fiery Prairie sunsets, the pop of fireworks, the autumn canopy of trees and dramatic stormy skies.
Arts reporter Jen Zoratti talks to Urso about his unusual perspective on the city.

'If we’re going to build it, we’re going to build it right'
Jim Gauthier, the chairman of Gauthier Automotive Group, has revved up another housing endeavour in north Winnipeg.
A new seven-story, 123-unit rental apartment complex exclusive to those 50 years and older — named the Prestige — is the first such residence to hit the region in years.
