The Wrap: Doctor’s licence cancelled, biz loan deadline day, and the Jets ‘Mr. Everything’

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba has cancelled the medical licence of Arcel Bissonnette, a now-former physician in Ste. Anne, Man.

In November, a judge convicted Bissonnette of sexually assaulting five women who were his patients. He faces another trial involving 10 counts of sexual assault next month.

Critics and victims have long demanded more transparency from the college, with calls growing in the wake of its handling of allegations against Bissonnette.

 

Tomorrow is the deadline for Canadian businesses to repay pandemic loans and receive partial forgiveness. Business groups say that will spell closure for many struggling companies.

More than 20,000 Manitoba businesses and non-profits received a Canada Emergency Business Account loan during the COVID-19 pandemic, securing up to $60,000 to help them survive.

Up to one-third of the loan amounts could be forgiven if the outstanding balance is repaid by Thursday — otherwise, the debt will be converted into a three-year loan with five per cent annual interest.

An estimated three out of four of the loans in Manitoba have not been fully repaid.
