A report from the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service suggests to meet a $3 million city cost-cutting directive, the service would have to take up to five department vehicles out of service some of the time to reduce overtime costs.

The report warns taking the vehicles off the street could increase response times, and the firefighters’ union argues it could jeopardize firefighter and citizen safety — but a city councillor thinks the savings could be found elsewhere.

Starbucks is closing its popular Osborne Village location, at least temporarily.

Starbucks Coffee Canada was vague about the reason for shuttering the popular shop, located at the corner of River Avenue and Osborne Street.

But the executive director of the Osborne Village BIZ believes the closure is related to rising crime in the neighbourhood, including an act of violence at a Manitoba Liquor Mart Wednesday evening.

One of two people charged after more than $13,000 from a 2021 charity ice-fishing tournament wasn’t donated to the Children’s Hospital Foundation as promised — was sentenced to 18 months of house arrest today.

According to an arrest summary provided to the court, Christian Lillyman contacted the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba in January 2021 with the idea of holding a virtual fishing derby, with net proceeds going to the foundation.

The Full Tilt Winter Walleye Tournament, which ran for two weeks, raised over $22,000, and paid out $9,000 in prizes.

Over the next six months, foundation representatives repeatedly contacted Lillyman to collect the funds it was owed but received no reply.
