The Wrap: Fort Gibraltar lawsuit, misidentification, Haberdashery moving and Thorkelsson retrospective

The parents of a child who suffered broken bones in the dramatic collapse of the elevated platform at Fort Gibraltar during a spring field trip are suing the City of Winnipeg and Festival du Voyageur.

Judy Panchenko’s world fell apart when two Winnipeg police detectives knocked on her door and told her that her grandson Peter had been the victim of a grisly homicide. Eight days later, while planning a funeral, she was shocked when he showed up at his father’s home to let his grieving family know he was still very much alive.

The Haberdashery is leaving the Exchange District after 15 years, and it’s moving to South Osborne. The owner tells Gabrielle Piché there’s not enough foot traffic, and things haven’t recovered enough since the pandemic.

To commemorate Ione Thorkelsson’s half-century as a trailblazer, innovator, glassblower and visual artist, the Winnipeg Art Gallery-Qaumajuq is hosting a series of retrospective releases featuring over 200 pieces of blown glass from her private archive.
