The Wrap: Fort Gibraltar, the Elam Ending, arts awards and the Catholic Church on First Nations

Good evening. Here’s a look at what our newsroom has been working on today:

Festival du Voyageur and the City of Winnipeg are facing questions about the safety of Fort Gibraltar’s elevated footbridge a day after a collapse sent 17 children and a teacher to hospital.

In the wake of allegations of sexual abuse by a priest on the Little Grand Rapids First Nation, columnist Niigaan Sinclair reflects on the Catholic Church’s history and impact in First Nations communities.

Mike Sawatzky talks to Nick Elam, the man behind the “Elam Ending” in the Canadian Elite Basketball League, a customized ending to a game that forces players and coaches to avoid the spectacle of constant fouling that often turns into a tedious late-game routine. The Sea Bears used it to spectacular effect in its franchise debut on Saturday.

And: The Winnipeg Arts Council, which distributes city funding for the arts, handed out its annual awards today: two went to Rosanna Deerchild and Emily Solstice Tait, the playwright and actor, respectively, in The Secret to Good Tea; one to Alan Greyeyes, the director of the Sakihiwe Festival; and the inaugural Career Achievement in the Arts Award went to pioneering artist duo Lorri Millan and Shawna Dempsey.
