The Wrap: Full strike at Liquor Marts, sex assault charges tossed and a new start for a Sherbrook landmark

Unlike the rotating strike action that has gone on since July 19, in which retail staff at Manitoba Liquor Marts went back to work on days in between picketing, MGEU now says their workers will remain on strike indefinitely.

As a result, this week only six Liquor Marts — the Crestview, Garden City Square, Grant Park, Hargrave and Ellice and St. Vital Square locations in Winnipeg, and the Victoria location in Brandon — will be open daily between noon and 5 p.m.

A judge has stayed charges against a man accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl, ruling the Crown “dragged its heels” in bringing the case to trial.

The then-18-year-old accused was charged with sexual assault in July 2022 in connection with an incident alleged to have taken place in October 2021. A trial in the case was not set to begin until February 2024, exceeding the 18-month limit for provincial court charges to be resolved.
