The Wrap: Kelsey McKay sentencing, Arby’s coming, Jets’ Bowness on leave, and dog-treat taste test

In a Winnipeg courtroom Tuesday, a judge heard the devastating impact high school football coach Kelsey McKay’s abuse had on his victims.

“He has absolutely destroyed parts of my life that I will never get back,” one man said in a police video statement recorded in late April 2022. The man died by suicide months later.

Last July, McKay pleaded guilty to nine counts of sexual assault and two counts of luring in relation to nine teenage victims he had coached during his years at Vincent Massey Collegiate and Churchill High School.

The Crown is seeking a sentence of 25 years in prison.

Four years after the Arby’s fast food sandwich chain exited Manitoba, a new building is being constructed near the Seasons outlet mall in anticipation of its return.

Arby’s — known for its roast beef sandwiches and its decade-long ad slogan “We have the meats” — once operated several shops in Winnipeg.

A spokesperson says it will likely open multiple locations in Winnipeg over the next five years.

Winnipeg Jets head coach Rick Bowness left the team during a road trip yesterday, returning to Winnipeg for what the club is calling a minor medical procedure.

Bowness was in a New York hospital for much of Monday, then flew back to Winnipeg in the evening, the team said. There’s no timetable for his return.

Associate coach Scott Arniel described the situation as “serious,” but added, “they know what it is, he’s going to get looked at and he might even be back — we’ll see how it goes — by the end of the trip.”
