The Wrap: Landfill-search complaint, vacant-home lawsuit, Taste of Ukraine and the Jets dust off after a loss

Good evening. Here’s a look at what our newsroom has been working on today:

'What happened was not right'

Cambria Harris has filed a human rights complaint against the Manitoba Progressive Conservative party.

The complaint accuses the party of violating the Human Rights Code when they campaigned on their decision not to search a Winnipeg-area landfill for the remains of Harris’ mother and other women believed to be the victims of an alleged serial killer.

“It was absolutely a violation of human rights and discriminatory to Indigenous people,” Harris told the Free Press Monday.

'It's been a long time coming'

The City of Winnipeg is suing a man for just over $20,000, saying he owes the money in unpaid fines and reimbursement for bylaw inspection of four vacant inner-city houses.

A city spokesman said officials would not comment specifically on the lawsuit while it’s before the court, but added such a move is not the city’s first step when trying to collect vacant building fees.

The owner of the homes has not yet filed a statement of defence.

'It's a blessing'

Taste of Ukraine held its grand opening today in the CF Polo Park food court, with a menu that includes perogies, cabbage rolls, kolbasa and chicken Kyiv and other Slavic favourites.

The restaurant serves up a taste of home — and offers some much-needed employment — to Ukrainians who have immigrated to Manitoba since Russia began its invasion.

'That was a nice moment'

Rick Bowness often refers to the Winnipeg Jets as one big family.

Those tight-knit bonds were on display once again when news he’s heading to his first NHL All-Star game became official this past weekend.

“The group had a chance to tell him that he was going. He didn’t know it was coming. We had a meeting and put it up on the screen so he found out,” associate coach Scott Arniel revealed Monday.

Mike McIntyre writes on the coaching honour — and also reveals which player will be teeing it up with the pros this summer, and who broke out the garbage mitts to get through this cold snap.
