The Wrap: Library attacker in court, busy 911 lines, and a First Nation strikes gold

Good evening. Here’s a look at what our newsroom has been working on today:

A 14-year-old boy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder today in the December killing of Tyree Cayer at the Millennium Library. The death shocked the city and forced an overhaul of security measures at the library branch.

Winnipeg’s 911 call centre had its busiest month on record in May, receiving 42,127 calls. One caller in May waited more than six minutes for an answer. Police are still analyzing the surge in calls, but believe an issue with the Android phone operating system is at least partly to blame.

The Marcel Colomb First Nation is one of the poorest reserves in Canada. But its tide is about to turn: it’s literally sitting on a gold mine. Business reporter Martin Cash was in the northern Manitoba community for the signing of a historic revenue-sharing deal with Alamos Gold.
