The Wrap: Manitoba Hydro revives consulting service, restaurant owners fed up and Desiree Scott calm in chaos

In 2021, when the provincial Progressive Conservatives were in power, Manitoba Hydro announced it would wind down one of its subsidiaries that provided global energy consulting and management services and focus on its core operations rather than compete with international consulting firms.

Now, three years after it was unplugged by the PCs, the NDP government and its new Manitoba Hydro board are reviving the Crown corporation’s global consulting arm.

Finance Minister Adrien Sala, who is in charge of Hydro, said the resurrection of Manitoba Hydro International is an effort to boost revenues and lower electricity rates.

Winnipeg restaurant owners fed up with theft and vandalism are taking matters into their own hands, partnering with a well-known organization to help identify and catch people committing crimes.

Ravi Ramberran — the owner of Four Crowns Inn, Dreamland Diner, St. James Burger and the Stagger Inn — is organizing a motorcycle rally to generate support for Winnipeg Crime Stoppers.

He hopes the Motorcycle Ride for Crime, set to take place in September, will become an annual event that spreads awareness for the charity, which accepts anonymous tips from the public in exchange for cash rewards.

Lorraine Ramsey ‘s 29-year-old daughter Karleigh, who has been diagnosed with anorexia, weighs just 86 pounds and isn’t getting nearly enough calories from eating.

After being admitted to Victoria General Hospital in March, Karleigh has gained just 13 pounds on a daily intake of between 600 and 800 calories, nowhere near the 5,000 to 6,000 her mother said she needs to get to a healthy weight.

Following a Free Press report on the woman’s plight last week, and her mother’s failed attempts to get her daughter the help she needs, HSC’s eating disorders program has agreed to admit her.

And in the middle of it all is Desiree Scott, the Winnipegger who only got her ticket to Paris at the last minute and now finds herself playing a key behind-the-scenes role with the Canadian women’s soccer team at the 2024 Summer Olympics.

“I believe that things happen for a reason and in a sense I was meant to be here amongst the storm,” Scott told the Free Press on Monday from France.
