The Wrap: Murder conviction appeal, doctor oversight, a tiny world at the WAG and a Winnipegger helps Scots perfect hoops

Good evening. Here’s a look at what our newsroom has been working on today:

'The key, of course… is motive'

James Lockyer, a founding director of Innocence Canada, appeared before the Manitoba Court of Appeal today, seeking to have a new trial and fresh evidence to be admitted in the case of a Winnipeg teen convicted in 2022 for killing his mother.

Lockyer argued there is evidence to suggest it was a former co-worker of the 51-year-old victim who committed the slaying or had someone kill the victim on his behalf.

'We stand on the side of victims'

The Manitoba government says it is open to making changes to legislation that governs doctor oversight, something critics of the self-regulating College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba have long called for.

Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara shared the news with the Free Press late Thursday, after the newspaper learned a Manitoba doctor convicted of sexual assault would have his medical licence cancellation hearing held behind closed doors.

A teensy boy runs away with a woman’s black bikini top waving like a flag behind him with a teensy topless woman in hot pursuit. Look closely, and you’ll find dozens of these tiny stories in Kim Adams’ miniature vignettes.

Adams’ Earth Wagons, now on view at WAG-Qaumajuq, reveals a society humming along, teetering on the edge of oblivion. Just everyday people, living out their little lives, working and playing amid larger existential threats of their own creation.

Scotland is far from a basketball powerhouse, however, former Winnipegger Kerri Kuzbyt hopes she can help it get to a point where more Scots can take up spots on Great Britain’s roster.

Kuzbyt, a former University of Winnipeg Wesmen point guard, was recently hired by Basketball Scotland to be its new head of female basketball development. She will head the youth academy, identifying and working with players who have the potential to represent Team Great Britain or play professionally.
