The Wrap: ‘Parental rights’ debate, election roundup, Scheifele & Hellebuyck speak, and WAG exhibit

Good evening. Here’s a look at what our newsroom has been working on today:

'We’re talking... about literal life or death'

Reflecting on his experience as a transgender teen who was “not ready to come out to everybody all at once,” Trevor Kirczenow, an MLA candidate is warning requiring teachers to disclose a student’s preferred pronouns is a matter of life or death for LGBTTQ+ students.

Meanwhile, more than 1,000 students — including nearly half of one elementary school’s population — were absent from classes in Seven Oaks School Division Wednesday as misinformation spread online about its teachers distributing graphic sexual content.

'It’s very nostalgic'

Multimedia artist, jewelry maker and writer Tarralik Duffy’s solo exhibition, Gasoline Rainbows, opens today at WAG-Qaumajuq. It is the culmination of Duffy’s four-week residency at WAG-Qaumajuq.

Through her soft sculptures and drawings, Duffy turns the everyday objects that loomed large in her childhood memories of growing up in Salliq (Coral Harbour), Nunavut into bold, playful pop art.
