The Wrap: Peguis flood claim, WCB woes, PC values survey and Carey takes reins from Jones

Peguis First Nation has filed a $1 billion lawsuit against the federal and provincial governments and two upstream municipalities, over repeated flooding.

The number of floods in Peguis has increased since 1960, and the two municipalities “caused or contributed” to a 2022 flood through land-use changes that diverted water onto reserve land, the lawsuit alleges.

A source, who has decades of experience at the Workers Compensation Board, spoke with the Free Press. The source noted the last 12 to 18 months have been some of the most difficult of his career due to the high level of turnover, problems with hiring and retaining case-management workers, and recent policy changes that have resulted in more claims being accepted.

As it prepares for a leadership race, Manitoba’s Progressive Conservative party is asking its members for guidance after it got walloped in the fall election and “strayed from its values.”

A six-page values survey asks members to choose the five most important traits for the next party leader from a long list, including accountability, competence, empathy, engagement, ethics, and integrity.

Jennifer Jones left big curling shoes to fill after announcing in February the 2023-24 season would be her swan song in women’s curling.

On Wednesday, Jones’ former teammates Karlee Burgess, Emily Zacharias and Lauren Lenentine announced they’ve added veteran skip Chelsea Carey to the lineup.
