The Wrap: Police overtime, Nygard sentenced, crowded classrooms, Osborne Village growing
Plus: How Mike O'Shea's coaching style helps the Bombers win

Good evening. Here’s a look at what our newsroom has been working on today:

'Get more boots on the ground'

A new financial update indicates the Winnipeg Police Service is expecting to exceed its overtime budget by $2.3 million by the end of this year.

As a result, the head of the Winnipeg Police Board says it’s time to look at whether Winnipeg needs more police officers.

Coun. Markus Chambers said Winnipeg has grown in population and land area over recent years, so more officers may be needed to answer calls across the whole city.

Reporter Joyanne Pursaga investigates.

'A Canadian success story gone very wrong'

Former fashion mogul Peter Nygard is a “sexual predator” who showed no empathy for his victims, an Ontario judge said Monday as he sentenced the disgraced tycoon to 11 years in prison for his crimes in Toronto.

The 83-year-old’s time behind bars will work out to a little less than seven years after accounting for credit he received for time already spent in custody, and Nygard will be eligible to apply for parole in just over two years.

'Extraordinary circumstances'

Makeshift classrooms — including a library set up in a corridor — have Manitoba families fed up about the pace of new school planning to address enrolment pressures.

Elementary students in West St. Paul and Winnipeg’s Island Lakes suburb are among those who started the school year in an unconventional classroom.

'He can still get guys to run through a wall for him'

After years of success as head coach of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers — a decade-long tenure that began bumpy, but has been mostly a smooth ride the last several seasons — Mike O’Shea has put himself in the history books.

The Bombers’ win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Saturday’s Banjo Bowl moved O’Shea past the legendary Bud Grant for most wins as a coach in franchise history, with 103.

'Death of the Osborne strip often significantly overstated'

The Osborne Village neighbourhood is growing faster than it has in decades.

More than 830 new homes are either currently being built, are approved for construction, or have recently been completed.

The new era of development presents an important opportunity to leverage unprecedented growth and investment, to redefine the future of the iconic commercial main street that has long defined the heart of the neighbourhood, writes columnist Brent Bellamy.
