'He just wanted to have a fresh start'
Tucked into a booth at a bar somewhere in Manitoba, Tristan Mariash and David Burling toasted to good times and being fresh out of jail in mid-March.
Less than three months later, Mariash is dead after being shot by police in Otterburne and Burling is in custody, following a manhunt across Manitoba and Saskatchewan Wednesday.
Reporter Chris Kitching talked to family and friends of the man killed by police yesterday, and looks into his lengthy record for property- and driving-related crimes.

'We’re just feeling the pinch of some social issues'
Rising safety concerns have forced the Centennial Centre, which runs the Manitoba Museum and Centennial Concert Hall, to lock most of its exterior doors at all hours.
The change comes in response to “a significant increase” in crime problems in the past few months; the centre’s CEO cited problems with vehicle vandalism, broken windows, confrontations, encampments at the site’s loading bays, and public defecation.
Manitoba Museum doors will still be open during museum operating hours, while concert hall doors will open two hours before each event. Parkade patrons have to contact security on an intercom to gain access through exterior doors during business hours.
City hall reporter Joyanne Pursaga reports on the changes.

'Every year, like clockwork'
As pylons and blockades return to Winnipeg’s streets, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business is calling on the city to better support small businesses affected by road construction.
In a letter to city council, the CFIB urged the city to provide financial or other compensation, such as temporary tax breaks, to businesses affected by construction.
The lobby group also called for project completion within strict timelines and better communication with businesses.
Gabrielle Piché reports in our business section.

'Democracy is still under threat today'
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew and Prince William were among the dignitaries who visited Juno Beach in France today to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
Thirteen Canadian veterans of the Second World War who survived the war effort on the same beach — the oldest of them 104 years old — attended the anniversary event, seated in the front row of a crowd of thousands.
The Allied D-Day Invasion, codenamed Operation Neptune, launched on the coast of Normandy on June 6, 1944. The invasion was a turning point in the Second World War, beginning the liberation of France and laying the foundations of the Allied victory on the Western Front.
Read about ceremonies marking the operation in Normandy and in Canada, learn how Winnipegger Andrew Mynarski received Canada’s highest military honour, and take a fresh look at the heroism of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles on June 6, 1944.
